The only time I really though Lilly got to the level of coddling was in Lilly's level. Perhaps that's part of the reason Hanako left to join the newspaper club, to get away from Lilly. I thought she was much more reasonable in Hanako's level.

I don't blame Lilly though, its part of her nature. I do hope that in both routes, Hanako will be able to find the courage to talk to her friend about how she feels. It would break my heart if the two were to lose their friendship over this.

Her coddling kept Hanako from growing. If you call that a good job of parenting, you're obviously not ready to be a parent.

I'm not here to start a fight with anyone, that said, if you cannot see that she is in fact not coddling from all of the previous evidence given in my posts then I have nothing more to say to you on this matter.

Yes and no.

Her "coddling" may have kept Hanako from growing any further, but it was also the thing that allowed Hanako to open up to her in the first place.

Hanako would have had difficulty reaching the level she did without Lilly, but she couldn't go much further, if that makes sense to you.

How is it not coddling? Yes, her nurturing helped Hanako but it only did so to a point. After that, it became coddling.

"When Hanako needs time alone, Lilly gives it to her and doesn't tend to go out of her way to find her." - This? This is not a good thing. The space she gives Hanako isn't so Hanako can grow. It's so Hanako can curl up with a book or in her dorm, alone in her shell, and not grow at all. When Hanako seeks her out, what does Lilly do? Indulge her. Become a pillar to be leaned on for anything, so that Hanako never needs anyone else. She does not encourage Hanako to be less reliant upon her. She does not help her branch out. She enables the exact opposite by being over-protective and over-indulgent. And you can talk about how she recognizes that during some phone call but that's just a few lines that consume only seconds out of the hours of coddling.

In short, it's good for a first step, but we need something else for a more definite solution.

Once again, I don't see it. She does not give in to Hanako as she merely hangs out with her. As it was said, Hanako went to Lilly after hearing her comfort another classmate of hers. When the definition of coddling becomes sharing time with someone while doing what you like to do, then I will admit that Lilly coddles Hanako. In the mean time, the most extreme example of indulgence I can see is sharing the time they go to the store together... in which case Lilly doesn't wait around and is more than willing to get her shopping done on her own. Lilly lives out her own life while letting her best friend accompany her when she wants.

Besides, we don't see the jobs the girls land themselves with. I can tell you that having a job changes you emotionally, and more radically than high school or university.

I don't see how being a fry cook or secretary would affect one's emotions much...Except making you hate everything a little more, in the former case.

Like I said, it depends on what job you're doing. More specifically, it's how fast you adjust to the pressures of the job, and how much stress there is in the job in the first place.

If you're a secretary for a boss who has a tendency to fire unreasonable demands at you, and for some reason, you feel compelled to stay, the pressure level is going to go up.

Hey your first job can be a real confidence booster right out of school. You're actually earning money and supporting yourself for the first time.

Yeah, it probably would have been, but my confidence (and everything else) was too low to even manage that. I gotta get shit together this year...

I hear ya man. I've been out of work since June. :(

But really, the best thing to happen to Hanako would be for her to start getting articles published, or even get a babysitting gig in the neighborhood.
