Hanako ending..(spoilers)

Post by zxregxz »

Can someone please clear this up for me? I've completed the good ending for Hanako twice now, but the last few scenes I just don't understand. From the sex scene to the ending, I really didn't understand it. She thought that hisao would just throw her away or well I seriously just don't know. Can someone clear this up? Because it also gives off the feeling that she didn't want to have sex with him

Yeah. She did think Hisao was tired of her and wanted an actual girlfriend he could have sex with. You have to think about Hanako's past for a second. She's used to not being treated as a person. Nobody has ever really shown to care for her and the two people that do, Hisao and Lilly, often treat her more like somebody they need to protect than an equal.

She had sex with Hisao because she thought that would prove she was girlfriend material and that he'd stay with her.

It didn't turn out that way because they were both misreading each others. Hisao cared for her but didn't think she was ready for a relationship, when all of a sudden they had sex, e wasn't even sure what their relationship was.

Things became so awkward that they just couldn't go back to what they had in the past. They had to force some kind of confrontation between themselves and that's when they really opened up to each other and began to understand what the other was thinking.

As for the sex, you have to remember, Hanako doesn't even like people looking at her. Undressing in front of somebody and then having sex with them, that had to be incredibly difficult for her. She wanted to have sex, but only because she thought that would save their realtionship, the sex itself she didn't seem to comfortable with. Still, considering her smile at the end, and the fact that this was probably the only time in her life she had ever felt desirable, she might not have enjoyed it, but she probably enjoyed the fact that she had done it.

Does that make any sense to you?

Ahh so hisao wanted to be with her but wasn't sure she was ready and hanako took him not making a move as him being tired of her so she had sex with him so he would stay with her? But hanako wanted a relationship with him anyway...is that right?

She didn't...at least, not for the reason you'd usually want to sleep with someone.

There are two main factors at play here. Hisao's and Hanako's relationship and Hanako's views on friendship.

- Hisao and Hanako grow slowly closer over Act 2 and near the start of Act 3, Hisao is seriously considering asking her out. However, Hisao at that point believes Hanako is merely shy and dismisses Miki's words that Hanako's issues run much deeper. Then she has her panic attack in class. After visiting her in her room, Hisao comes to believe Hanako's too fragile for an actual relationship and he promply friendzones her, stating that "protecting her" will be enough for now. From that moment on Hisao's and Hanako's friendship becomes littered with "will they or won't they"-moments that never actually go anywhere because Hanako's too shy to confess to Hisao and Hisao believes moving the relationship beyond friends would scare Hanako off. An important part is during the pool game they play, where Hisao tells Hanako he'll protect her. Hanako seems disappointed, but doesn't really react. But there's no doubt she realizes what's going on. She also gets increasingly anxious whenever she notices Hisao pays attention to other girls.

- Hanako also has some very depressing views on friendships. Since her closest friends became her bullies in elementary school after her accident, Hanako came to believe that she was useless and people would only hang out with her until they found a reason to move on and leave her behind. This was also a secret fear in her friendship with Lilly and Hisao, believing that they only cared about looking after her out of some misplaced sense of responsibility, rather than being with her because they enjoyed her company. After Hanako locked herself away during her birthday, Hisao became more distant from her. The real reason for this was because Lilly convinced Hisao his obsessive worrying over Hanako was unhealthy and merely a diversion from his own insecurities. Thus after, that phone call, Hisao started focussing less on Hanako's issues and more on sorting his own life out. Hanako was unaware of this and (believing that trying to protect and take care of her was Hisao's only reason for being with her) came to the incorrect conclusion that Hisao concluded he couldn't fix her and thus was walking away from her. This may seem like an irrational conclusion, but for Hanako (who had her early childhood friendships brutally shattered) this made sense.

Hanako came to the (correct) conclusion that their various "will they or won't they"-moments (like their trips to the city or their brief moment of physical intimacy when she strokes his exposed chest) might have resulted in a relationship if Hisao could see her as a viable romantic partner instead of a broken little sister who had to be protected. And if they became boyfriend and girlfriend, it might not matter to him anymore that his efforts couldn't fix her social handicaps. So she awkwardly "seduced" him and allowed him to have sex with her. Not because she wanted the sex itself, but because she hoped it would change the way he saw her.

In a way, it worked. But it nearly backfired as both were too uncomfortable in each other's presence to even interact beyond a basic level. Realizing their friendship would never go back to the way it was now, Hisao arranged that talk in the park and with their friendship on the line, both came clean about their own thoughts and feelings on the situation. After a moment of despair after realizing how badly they both messed up, they reconciled and confessed.

Yes, Hanako's comments in the final scene indicate she's been in love with Hisao for a very long time and would have loved to become his girlfriend.

In fact, even in Lilly's route it's somewhat suggested Hanako has a crush on Hisao, since she states she doesn't mind him staring at her in her nightgown. (which, for someone like Hanako, is a big deal)

This is my understanding of it.

Hisao wasn't treating Hanako as an equal, he was white-knighting her and treating her as someone who needed to be fixed.
This wasn't a good relationship for them to be in, because although it was quite nice at that point in time, it had no future. What happens when Hisao moves off to college? The main thing they had in common was Hisao protecting her, but he wouldn't be able to do that, so what other reasons did they have to stay in contact? If they go to the same college (because Hanako couldn't take care of herself), what happens when Hisao finds a girlfriend, or when he gets bored of mothering Hanako?

Hanako wanted to change their relationship so they were equals. She wanted Hisao to see her as a person, rather than a project to fix. I think it'd be the understatement of the year to say she didn't handle it in the best way she could have, but she felt that the easiest way to do that would be to sleep with him. After all, redefiniting relationships is HARD, if you're an adult, just look at the difficulty you no doubt had redefining your relationships with your parents from parent:child to adult:adult. She felt that if she was his girlfriend and he could get sex, he would see her as more than just someone to mother.

The tragedy of the situation is that Hisao and Lilly were trying to mother Hanako to protect her from the world, but what they were really doing was stifling her and stopping her growing as a person. Hisao was trying to fight his own demons as well, but Hanako mistook that distance as a sign that he was becoming bored of her, and tried to be his girlfriend to reaffirm his interest in her, when it wasn't necessary.

Dang, I need to re-read KS again. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. Damn those feels!

Ahh ok, thanks. But they end up together anyway, which is good. The last scene of the ending was amazing. Also yes, feels, feels everywhere.

And getting out of the dreaded friend zone is even harder...having sex (or at least making out) is often the ONLY way to escape it. Well, that or a very specific confession, but Hanako's social awkwardness pretty much ruled that last option out. Hanako didn't know that Hisao WAS interested in her prior to her panic attack...all she knew was that he wasn't showing her any signs of attraction whatsoever because he was afraid of her having a breakdown.

The irony here is that Hisao had more things in common with Hanako than he had with any other character in KS. Everything from the way they viewed human contact, to several of their interests to the way they acted in certain situations showed a great deal of similarities. That's why he doesn't become more like the girl he's pursuing in Hanako's route...he's already like her at the start of Act 1. Initially he doesn't see this because he starts seeing her as a project to fix after her panic attack. It isn't until the end that he realizes they could become each other's crutch to get back onto their feet.

Ah. Inb4 "HISAO RAPED HANAKO" posts. Sigh.

Long story short, Hanako let Hisao finger bang and fuck her so she can prove to him that she can be more than a broken girl who needs to be protected 24/7. Hanako gets a new leash on life and finds happiness, friendship, and love; things she gave up on.
