Whenever i take off running i have gotten alot of surprising stares from people and comments after about how fast i was, though i can only keep that up for a very short time, and it kill me to run my fastest.

Any way, i was thinking, should i just get out there and start running or should use a chart or plan? I was honestly thinking about starting a short jog to the end of my neighborhood to this road, its a decent distance, not too long but good enough to start i think, and then slowly increase my distance when i leave my neighborhood and get to the road. Maybe i could use my school track too, not sure if its public.

Saw a chart with Emi on it too though, dont have it anymore. Is that one viable?
I'm using the Emi chart myself. I think most people in this thread are. (Wish the thread Op would just link the chart at the top though.) It should work for pretty much anyone save the morbidly obese. I'll attach the chart so you can use it. Good luck, and welcome!

Done.

Also this thread sure is moving quickly. I always come back to find far too many posts to try and respond with any conversation since its all well in the past.
Sorry for my grammar and spelling. I am not very good at those...

Bigbishounen wrote:Sounds like you might have a shin splint. It's fairly common for runners to get them, and especially common for new runners who have previously led a generally unhealthy lifestyle. (not saying anything about yours, just a general statement there.) My Dad ran for years, and every so often he'd come down with a shin splint and have to stop running for a week or so while it healed.

Lower leg injuries like that can cause a "cascade" effect up the leg where the whole leg is thrown out of whack, causing soreness elsewhere. The trick is when you feel any serious pain or soreness, STOP EXERCISING right away! If you have injured yourself you can compound the problem by trying to "push through" the pain. It sounds like you may have strained some of your upper leg muscles compensating for the lower leg pain and are now hurt in two places.

It'd recommend a couple acetaminophen or ibuprofen and a warm bath to ease the leg pain (jacuzzi is good if you have one.) Then a visit to your doctor to get your leg looked at. Your doctor may need to refer you to a specialist if the injury is severe. Seriously, don't skip that part, make sure you go to the doctor. Don't try to be Emi and tough it out or we'll all have to go Hisao on you and interrupt every thread you post in with "Go see the doctor Tomagotwo!!". :D

And once you are healed, be sure to start up exercising again. Although I'd recommend backing up a few days on the chart since you will have lost some ground. Don't let an injury stop you. Take care of yourself, heal up, and get back on it!
Hmm ok, that does seem to be what the problem is. And don't worry, my lifestyle was very unhealthy!

But what you're describing sounds exactly like what's happened. It's a lot better today after some sleep. I'll go to the doctors tomorrow, and miss out on my last run of week 2.

Kind of gutted about that because yesterday my stamina felt really strong, and I could have done more if I'd not hurt my leg, but I'm not gonna get anywhere if I'm injured. I'll wait until next week and then I'll redo session 2 of week 2 so I don't jump into week 3 after having taken a break. Sucks, but oh well, time for some rest.

Oh Awesome! Thanks HH!

And yeah, it moves quickly. I find myself checking it at least once every day just so I don't miss anything. I suppose that's actually good though, keeps you connected to the group and makes it more likely you'll stick to it. (just don't spend running time posting here. Lol!)

For those saying that the weather is no good for running, Check ebay and Craigslist for used treadmills. I got a really nice 4yo. treadmill off of Craigslist for like 25% of it's new cost. The owner was moving and couldn't use it anymore, so was just trying to dump it quickly. He had bought it for physical therapy after an injury, used it for 6 months and then not since. So it was in "like new" condition other than some dust.

I run exclusively on my treadmill. Not only is it easier on my legs (spring cushioned running bed) but weather doesn't matter and I don't have to run "in front" of anybody but me. Much less self-conscious about it that way. It's also convenient as I don't have to worry about leaving the house and forgetting my keys, or getting mugged at night (I run in the evening) or getting run over by a car. It's just better in so many ways. The only drawbacks are the lack of a breeze since you aren't actually moving forward, and the lack of anything interesting to look at. But that doesn't bother me much. I highly recommend a treadmill if you are serious about getting into shape by running or walking. Assuming you can find a good quality one for cheap, of course.

Speed off the line and sustained speed are different things entirely. :P You may have better luck with HIIT instead of LSD running.

RE: the Emi workout chart:

It has a small problem in that it's based on a running plan called "couch to 5k," but ignores an important component: you're supposed to take a five minute warmup walk before you begin the first jogging section. I usually do this by walking to the point where I want to start my run. It also helps to do a five minute cooldown walk after you finish the routine.

I thought the lack of a warmup was a bit odd. I'm still on the first week, so I've just been inverting the run/walk order on the chart (starting with walking, and then running) and then taking a cooldown walk afterwards. Good to know my thinking was in line with the proper method.

I'm not exactly following the plan, but 3 times a week I get out and run a mile/2 miles. I started that up this year, and it's really helped me out. I'm ~140lbs and about 6ft, but my lungs still need the exercise haha.

So, if any of you are looking for a different routine, I do mine pretty simple:

Run 3-5 minutes (I do 5) then take a 1 minute walking break. Do this for 30-35 minutes.
Then right after that I weight-lift for about 20 minutes.

Some days I do various exercises instead of walking too. Like I'll run for 2 minutes, then 1 minute of jumping jacks. Then run 2 minutes, then do 1 minute of jumping rope. Do that for 25-30minutes.

My routine probably isn't the most optimal, but it works well for me.

I can cut back yea, how does pop affect the body anyways? why does it make u gain weight the way it does? the sugar?, but what about drinks any suggestions on that, in order to avoid pop i would need to replace one addiction with another. Arizona tea is good, but do they sell in packs.... hmmmmm.

I have been working out for 3days straight now, i did 6 days straight last week rested 1 day and went back to working out, i plan on keeping this 6 day workout rest on 7th up. As for running i have yet to do so, and still got no bike :(
Well other than provide you some refreshing drink. Soda is as with any drink bad for you in excessive amounts. However one can/bottle of soda a day isn't too bad for you and should suffice.

Personally ATM gave up soda (For Lent, yes I do this silly practice of abstaining from something) and drinking tons of water, juice, and tea.

An alternative to soda as you said before could be tea, personally I drink a cup of juice.
Well i drink tea lol, I'll try my best to drink only 1 or 2 pop a day. Arizona tea should be a good replacement right?

Real tea, dude.

Anyway, if you satisfy your sweet tooth again and again many times a day, you get too used to the sweet taste and need more and more sugar to achieve the same effect.
When you cut the sugar down (way way down in your case), sweet stuff suddenly starts being far more satisfying.

And you will also be able to enjoy taste nuances more.

Ow... my legs... this is gonna suck tomorrow. In finishing W2:D3, I hit the treadmill again but I figured since I have two days of rest I'll deviate from the plan a little bit. I think I went something like 2:1, 5:2, 3:2, 4:2 running:walking. Does walking home from work for 15 minutes count as a warmup? :D

Probably.

This fitocracy thing is neat. It'll make it east not only to track bodyweight and exercise goals, but I can take statistical notes for my hockey games and set concrete goals to work towards.
