Other disabilities games, movies, books?

Post by Babli »

After completing all 5 routes of game, I found myself searching for more stories with disabled characters. So I wonder, do you have some recommendations for good books, movies or indie games that feature disabled characters? It doesnt need to be about overcoming disabilities. More like good, realistic story with disabled characters.

...yeah, something like Katawa Shoujo  but they dont need to be a purely romantic or coming of age stories.

By staying in the world of visual novels, I have 2 for you :

Brass Restoration. Looks like Katawa Shoujo in the point of the game (you are a teenage boy who tries to find love at school), but in this game only the protagonist is disabled (he lost his left arm).

Saya no Uta. This one is pretty violent, but include romance too. Again, only the protagonist is disabled (got... transformed by a brain surgery after a car accident. Play the game to find out more.)
"If there can be no victory, then I will fight forever."
-Koth of the Hammer

"If you're not having fun, what's the point of living forever?"
-An unknown vampire

You can spot a werewolf-infested town by its lack of butcher shops.

Don't underestimate the aerodynamic qualities of the common goblin.

A short google-spray yielded the following:
Amazon - Haven't read any of those, so no idea if they're any good.
Listverse - Mostly movies and TV-shows.
Some more movies - I sincerely recommend "A beautiful Mind"

Also, I learned that Sherlock Holmes shows many sympoms of being bipolar.

Regarding Anime, disabilities seem to be a lot less common.
The most well known cases should be
Nunally from Code Geass (blind)
Rezo from Slayers (blind)
Chane Laforet from Baccano (mute)
Chihiro from Ef (lost an eye)

Oh yeah, Toph from Avatar, which is not really an Anime.

Not about a disability in the physical sense, but anyway, two movies:
Rain Man ( http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Film/RainMan )
Knocking on Heaven's Door (yeah, same as Bob Dylan's song - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119472/ )

Both I think are pretty good.

Professor X - Paraplegic.

Serious though, there are very few games about disabilities, and movies tend to be over-dramatic tearjerkers.

A Book comes to mind, The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway, the protagonist Jake Barnes has a somewhat mysterious war wound that made him impotent or maybe a eunuch (he wont talk about it), but his (ex) lover is a slutty expatriate, and since Jake is wounded they can never be together, Jake is too grim and bitter her lover needs a man that can satisfy her, but they are still friends, or something like it. Its not a story about disabilities, more a history about how one can cope with it.

I have to pimp the Miles Vorkosigan series of novels by Lois McMaster Bujold. The main character was hit by a teratogenic poison in the womb, which leaves him with stunted growth and brittle bones in a society that values physical prowess and fears mutation. He compensates by being a hyperactive little git with a brilliant tactical mind.

There was some discussion here already, concerning games mainly. Feel free to look.
But games include mainly laser-eyes and cannon-limbs. Not really consistent with the genre.

The OP said nothing about the disabilities having to be physical...
And it's a great movie anyway.

Very good movie about an autistic man. Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman both play superb roles.

Children of a Lesser God with real life deaf actress Marlee Matlin.
Katawa Shoujo is a game that, by all accounts, shouldn't exist, but it does and we're happier because of it!
