Lndbcn wrote:I had always been intrigued by the idea of visual novels. I figured that the medium could be used to tell stories impossible to tell in a book or movie (I've discovered just how right I was; for instance, the story of Ever17 just wouldn't work in another format).

However, I never played any for two main reasons. The first was that I'm not a big fan of anime-style art. The second reason is that I got the impression that most if not all visual novels limited themselves to being porn games. Hentai doesn't really do anything for me.

However, my interest in the genre returned when a friend told me about Katawa Shoujo. When he said it revolved around romancing various crippled girls, I assumed he was just trolling me. However, he went on to talk about how surprisingly sensitive and well-researched the game was, especially due to its emphasis on how the girls adapt to their disabilities, instead of focusing on the disability itself. He also said that I should have no problem sympathizing with the main character, since one route involved romancing a hot tall blond blind girl who's way too kind, gentle, and classy for him, just like my fiancée (now wife). I'm still not sure whether that was a compliment or insult to me.

Intrigued by all of this, I gave it a try. I was impressed by how good the writing actually was, and the sympathetic way some difficult subjects were handled. I enjoyed the LIlly route most, for obvious reasons. My wife actually tried the game as well, though she enjoyed the Hanako route most. She didn't finish the LIlly route, since according to her, it felt "a bit unsettling and 'Twilight Zone'-ish to romance a character who's pretty much myself".

I really want to thank the devs for creating a game that served as a gateway for my wife and I into the world of visual novels. She may enjoy them even more than I do, since as long as the text is read to her, she can actually share enjoyment of a computer game with me. After trying KS, we completed Narcissu, Ever17, and just finished G-Senjou no Maou. We're planning on trying Sharin no Kuni next, followed maybe by Fate/Stay Night.

Sorry about the outrageously long first post.
That's a lovely story. :) My feelings are very similar. The idea of "cripple romance" is somewhat cringe-worthy a first, especially when you find out there will be pornographic elements later on. However, once you give it a chance, you realize how much thought and care truly went in to it and you view the characters as people with detailed personalities rather than just "some cripples you get to screw" (not that I'm implying you ever viewed it that way, but after reading some comments from various sites I can safely say some people do). You gotta admire the people who took on a somewhat taboo subject and turned it into what I can honestly say is a work of art.

Congratz on the marriage by the way. :)

I found the concept of this game fascinating because I had to take early retirement due to disability - I relate to Hisao only mine was head trauma that left me with seizures - also another member of my family is in a wheelchair. :(

So this strikes close to home and I had to see for myself and I agree it is a sensitive handling of a topic that is avoided too often.

I find that when people see the 'disablity' listed next to your name even if it isn't obvious they shy away.

when I have a seizure in a public place and there is a wide circle of avoidance around me unless I am with someone I know. :?

if you get to know them girls with disabilities have just as much too offer and also a strength of character to build on that is the result of the loneliness which is a result of being isolated from 'normal' people

I'm aware of the existece of the project for a long time, at first I thought that it was a Japanese game, took some time until I find out the truth (sorry, I don't browse /a/ much). I liked the idea but wasn't very aware about the development of the game, mostly I would look at the art by Pimmy on DA...

By the way, hey Pimmy! Are you still around? Do you still remember me? I'm the guy who requested this to make the labcoat a little more http://pimmy.deviantart.com/art/Paper-C ... d-90973212
Probably not, we didn't talked much anyway.

Back to KS, I think I should have joined early, I'm a medical student and I was voluntary in an ambulatory that mainly threated and prevented pressure ulcers but also dealing with rehabilitation, emotional support, etc (there is a physiotherapist, psychologist, social worker, nurse, all voluntary too) so I ended knowing many people with varying degrees of disabilities, from a little girl with spina bifida, to a ex-cop paraplegic due to a bullet in the spinal cord, to tetraplegic guy victim of a motorcycle accident or a talkative guy who is a drug dealer (who would suspect from a paraplegic guy on a wheel chair?).

Talking about it, I still playing the First Act but I haven't seen many wheel-chairs... Shouldn't they be more common on a shool like this? You know, accidents, spina bifida and other causes of paraplegy/tetraplegy...

I think Hisao talks about extra-wide doors in the dorms so that people in wheelchairs can get in. pretty sure it's in there somewhere. but I'm not really surprised that we don't have any pictures of people in wheelchairs - if someone's not an important character, they don't get art.

but to be serious for a minute, I think it's really cool that we've got people who work with the disabled playing this game, same thing with people who are disabled. welcome, yo.

amazing how preference changes now that the game's actually out.
Akira/Hanako for the win. Meiko/Nurse for even more win. Miki/Misha for win that goes BEYOND THE IMPOSSIBLE.

I remember that, that means that the school is supposed to be prepared for them (even with all those stairs and that I didn't see any slopes or elevators, but let's suppose that they are there somewhere). But when it is given a quick view of the 3-3 class no wheel-chair can be seen. http://shimmie.katawa-shoujo.com/post/v ... search=3-3

Even tetraplegic people can be active! (even sexually)
In fact, here we have a tetraplegic congresswoman/member of parliament (I'm not sure how to translate this accurately to English)

Curiously, in a very Katawa Shoujo way, there is an "ouvidora" (the best translation would be ombudswoman I think) that is deaf but since she receives and replies the complains by letter/email people never notice that

Another curious thing: when I was in High School I had one legally blind history teacher who never needed to carry any map. He would draw with astonish accuracy any map needed in the black board

By the way, is there anyone with osteogenesis imperfecta? At least to me it would make more sense than many of the reason of the people there... I will assume that some of them were supposed to stay in the school just until they get stable but decided to stay there even when their condition wasn't an obstacle to a normal school anymore.

How about Misha? Is there a consensus about what's her disability? How about ADHD? I think it fits well with her Tsuruya-ish personality. Not that I think that someone with ADHD would need a special school for that but on the other hand maybe I wouldn't had to change schools so often during my childhood if I weren't on normal schools.

The background pic used for the hallways between classes clearly shows sloping floors, as well as the one used for the main hall where Hisao meets his teacher and again later the nurse while carrying the paint bucket for Rin.

I mean, every time he have to go from one floor to another he uses stairs.

By the way, finished the first act! Seems like I got the Emi/Rin route!

It's one or the other. Whose ending scene did you get?
It's a good thing Shizune is deaf, she is the only one who can stand (not) hearing "Wahaha~!" over and over.

Probably Emi's because Emi doesn't even appear in Rin's

I went with them to the festival.

Probably Emi, she seemed to have become attached to Hisao while Rin was being Rin

Yeah, that's Emi's end. In Rin's end you're with Rin the whole time.

It was so long ago when I first heard of Katawa Shoujo that I almost forget how I stumbled upon it. But I think at the time I was lurking around VN database half drunk and searched for crippled chicks; to my great surprise the first one I clicked on was handled really well and the story touched me so I saved somewhere past Iwanako's confession to read the rest later while sober.

Many manly tears were shed. Of course there was whiskey, rum, pretzels, and blankets involved but that's for another time.

EDIT..I just went to VN db for nostalgia and the first quote I got at the bottom of the screen was Hisao's speech about "When people say 'come on, it'll be fun' it's never, ever about anything fun." THE INTERWEBS ARE WATCHING ME D:

So given that the final path is now complete, I've decided to make an account before the full game comes out. I actually found myself here via the Fakku Q&A 2 and a half years ago, and have been lurking around here ever since. Not exactly the most exciting story, but felt like saying something before the game comes out ^^.
