A noob's attempt at KS Papercraft

Post by Kapcanson »

So... uh... Nice to meet you, guys.
I thought I was over it, but nope, after a whole year KS struck me down again with all the "feels" included.
About 10 months ago I made my first attempt at papercraft. A rather poor one, but hey. I came up with a simple design, played around a bit in 3DS Max, then Pepakura Designer. The guy at the printshop gave me a few strange looks and muttered something about feminist agenda (I still don't have a color printer - a major pain in the a$$ when designing a paper model), but then I got my templates. And then I just dumped them in the bottom drawer and got sidetracked. They waited... until today.
(The actual model will be assembled more carefully - this is just a test print to "troubleshoot" the design. I will have to get a sharper knife, better paper, and some markers to paint the edges of all the dark parts before gluing)
I would show you the rest, but I got tired of trying to get the arms right. I swear, next time I design a papercraft, I will make sure it has no arms
As soon as my exams are over (bachelor's degree, here I come), I will go on with the project.
I will (hopefully) keep you updated.

Oh, maybe someone with papercraft experience could tell me how to design hands? Those fingers are just so tiny...

That 'noob attempt' is beautiful. If you made them in bulk, lots of people here would want them. However, as it's possibly only your hobby, we'll settle for the pictures. :)

Thanks for posting it. Made my day. :)

As someone who's worked with papercrafts for, like, a decade, I must say, what you've accomplished here is very good. Keep up the good work, and when you're done, do whatever the fuck you want

Okay, now I'm fucking pissed. You two ought to know much better than this.

Please disregard this fallout, Kapcanson. Your work is really nice.

I have no idea how that rule skipped my mind. Probably because I'm part of several forums that don't have this rule. Either way, Summimasen, Cook-sama...

ANYwho, you work has inspired me to get back into the papercraft business. That's cool, I guess.

This... it only slips my mind because I don't even think of it as an actual request, I was just kind of kidding. Sorry.

I'm really glad you like my work. No photos today, as there was no significant progress made, but I thought I will give you a little update on the project.
Since last year I've picked up some 3DS skills, so I felt compelled to do some remodeling on lower torso and legs. They look much better now, but still need to be textured, unfolded and printed. Last time I just picked a random black fabric texture and airbrushed some folds and seams on it, but now I'm thinking of stuffing a pair of black jeans into a scanner. Maybe my model is only 27cm tall, but the texture quality should be enough to assemble it in 1:1 :)
Another thing I discovered is that a fountain pen is a perfect tool for dyeing the white cut edges, even if already glued - paper covered with toner doesn't absorb ink and you can just wipe off the excess with your finger.
I could still use some advice on dealing with hands. Both palms and arms are up for some serious remodeling. A toothpick turned out too thick to roll separate fingers on its tip, and elbows seem a bit unnatural.

Oh, and don't worry - after I'm done, I'll definitely give you the templates. What is the fun of making stuff if you don't share it?

Jesus Christ

You've essentially created a waifu sculpture that anyone can make for themselves for free, rather than buying one from t'internet.

Needless to say, fantastic work :P I'm afraid I can't offer an advice on the hands, but I will definitely be sticking around to see :3
