What? Sometimes I wake up at night frustrated at how much of a Mary Sue the protagonist is.

Also, you missed out Ever17.

I also heartily recommend Kana. It's rather heart-wrenching, though I guess I'm looking through nostalgia goggles as this was my first VN.

KS felt strikingly like Narcissu in places, albeit far less minimalist. Ever17 is probably my favorite VN of all time, if only because of how it has this omnipresent sense of mystery and secrecy that is blown wide open in the finale. Kana was eh to me. Just another VN in a series of VNs played at 5am at ga tech due to lack of anything better to do.

I'd recommend Yume Miru Kusuri. The art is really good, despite the relatively short time it takes to go through the game. Also, Snow Sakura. It's not that bad a game, but it does piss me off, so I haven't beaten it yet.

...Even though I have to grit my teeth at the very idea, "ONE ~to the radiant season~" is a VN and indeed contains one blind, one mute, and one... KEY-diseased, maybe? :| girl, plus themes dealing with terminal illness, making it similar to KS as far as that goes, which isn't all that much.
But I'd not say I recommend it, exactly. KEY has lost any chance of me recommending it a while ago.
Shattering your dreams since '94. I also fought COVID in '20 and '21, and all I got was this lousy forum sig.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys, they're great for someone like me who's quite new to VN's. Checked out Narcissu, which was very touching and left me with a heavy feeling. I'm planning to play Crescendo or Yume Miru Kusuri as soon as I've...recovered.

And now my massive Lun Lun rage is coming back. Thanks a lot.

Not translated (yet?), but I would recommend Yosuga no Sora and December When There Is No Angel.

From that list, how many are "Hisao waking up in hospital and losing purpose in life" dark and how many are a bit more light hearted? :/

Tsukihime is definitely similar to KS. The main character wakes up in a hospital just like the opening to KS, (to not ruin the story for those who have not played I won't say the truth, but just is what is surmised in the opening and even then I'll remain as vague as possible), he was sent away somewhere else to live and then returned to his birth home after his father's death. Everyone in the house has a unique condition - I can't say what without spoilers but it is unique for each character and a major hindrance to each of them. The main character himself has heart and anemic problems and is prone to passing out. In addition to this he sees lines everywhere unless he wears these special glasses. It turns out these lines he sees are the "life" or "existence" of everyone and everything. Every living and non living thing has such a line. The character has the power to break these lines, and it soon becomes an uncontrollable obsession for him to do so. Although the reason he is compelled to do so is revealed later in the game. He is the character who most fits the main character of KS. Being physically weak, bedridden, uprooted from his previous home/life, and surrounded by strange people who are all suffering in some form or another.

Not to mention Ciel looks and acts almost exactly like Shizune minus the whole deaf thing. And I guess Akiha sorta looks similar to hanako... sorta... kinda... and the main girl's personality is almost exactly like Misha's in a sense (loud, weird, inappropriate at times, imposes herself onto the main character despite his initial reluctance)

I personally really like Tsukihime very very much. It is very expensive game but very much worth it. It has an english translation by group Mirror Moon. If you're looking for something dark or offbeat like KS, I think it is the closest you can come.

----------------

If you're just looking for another visual novel in english, search for games by Hirameki Int. They have quite a few. My personal favorites were dark alchemist, Ever17, and Piece of Wonder. However Hirameki's games are filled with typos and a certain level of unprofessionalism. And the company went out of business blah.

----------

Fan translated VN's include
Kannon
Clannad
Chaos Head (haven't played this one yet. I stopped downloading stuff due to viruses so waiting til I get some money to purchase it from jlist or the like)

Speaking of jlist, if you don't mind Pr0n, there are many VN's to choose from.

I have a few that I really want to check out despite the pr0n, myself :)

Just a minor correction, Shiki doesn't see the "life" of things. I'll leave at that. Personally, I think Akiha and Hanako are way too different to even be compared to one another, the only similarity is that they have long dark hair. As for Shizune and Ciel, I mildly agree, but Misha is pretty close to Arcueid, as you've said.
As for something light, you could try True Remembrance. It's a good story that can be read without a hassle and it's legally free to download.
Edit: Also, True Remembrance has no porno.
