By that logic, an erotic choose-your-own-adventure book with pictures would also be a game.

i think it depends on the medium. because VN's are computer programs, they are considered games.

That's the only difference? Because they're digital?

When I first started trying out VNs, the first thing they reminded me of was an RPG with no battles or running around. I'd say they're in a weird grey area between games and books. (Although if we want to get technical, I remember Aura or somebody saying "KS is not a game" at some point.)

E-books are games.

Cool, then that makes my e-reader a game console.

It all depends on your definition of what a game is. *puts on meta hat* Merriam-Webster says "an activity engaged in for diversion or amusement," which isn't very specific. I think if it requires some element of chance or skill to achieve a desired outcome, and it's (at least nominally) done mainly for fun, it's a game. In that case, KS does somewhat qualify, but a linear VN like Narcissu doesn't. You could also consider CYOA books to be very simple games too by that definition.

It also depends on your expectations. If you approach a VN expecting to play a game, you're probably going to be disappointed. If you approach it as a book, you'll probably have a much more favorable impression (assuming the writing's up to the standards of what you'd consider decent for a book).

LOTSA TALKING
Fellas, while the discussion you have ongoing is fairly decent, may I ask you to shift it to somewhere else in Public Discussion? It stopped having much to do with Act 1 feedback about one page ago.

Oh yeah, that. *takes off meta hat*

I just played through act 1 again (taking Lilly's route) and I must say I'm more eager/impatient for the full release than ever. I tried imagining it with the new Emi and Yuuko sprites and, however much controversy there may be over the latter at least, I think the game will be much better off with them.

I actually have a question about the final release. for those of us who have act 1 version 1, will the full release have act 1 version 2, or will it go off of the game data from the existing game?

and if it goes off of v2, is there much difference to act 1?

I think the only differences are bug and typo fixes...

Either way, the only difference I actually saw between v1 and v2 was that Act 1 v1 worked flawlessly on ReactOS, while v2 crashed :P

I just played Rin's path through with the help of the walkthrough posted on this forum. I ah... It's hard to describe it in words but to try it: I'm left in awe, completely stunned and positively confused how powerful experience as whole it was, minding it was just the first act. I read kind of a lot, I've played some VN's before and I must say that Rin seemed to be a really well made character, and the particular way of playing the social game felt fresh and relatively realistic.
I'm pretty introvert myself so if I actually met someone like Rin I'd possibly just creep out and run away, but yeah. Thanks thanks thanks, I can't wait for the whole game. :D

Speaking of Rin, when I played through that ending there was a missing line about the Prussian Blue somewhere. Its context wasn't established and then later on I think Hisao made a comment about it, which I only understood because of its mention in the Emi playthrough.

Forgive me if this has been mentioned before. ` ~`

Halkure, that avatar... I've seen you elsewhere, and yet I don't know where... I'm pretty sure the avatar was on the left-side of the page, so that's a slight clue. :P
