Comrade does not approve of this decadence corruption...
One of the things we were told when we discussed this was that we keep the mods out of it; right now, there is no reason to worry about that.

Ugh, can't people who write fanfics just add a description of who the fanfic is about on the title? gettin' real sick of opening them all in tabs and finding out they're mary sue fanfictions.

This thread helped me alot, thank you :)

Sadly a Mary Sue-warning would amount to a valuaion, which is not allowed...
If you simply discount all OC fics out of hand, you'll miss a few very good ones.

I'd be tempted to create a Mary Sue Alert List if I wasn't certain the endeavor would deliver me into the maw of madness.

Having a "warning, Mary sue!" in this thread got get authors mad that their story was tagged as one, and it would lead to arguments that we don't want.
Also, we are not allowed to have those kinds of quality measurements on this thread.

Obviously it wouldn't be on these forums; it would be a Google document, and I would only ever write one as penance for some kind of capital crime.

Yeah, i see no reason why would you want to do it. it would be way too much work, not rewarding, and probably no one will ever see it.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a mary sue fic?
I'm just a rusty old goat and a poor writer by anyone's standards, so no need to take my advice to heart, and when you do, take a handful of salt with it.

A Mary Sue/Gary Stu-fic is a story with an OC that is usually (though not neccessarily) a self insert - an idealised version of the author themselve.
In a KS-fanfiction it is usually a new student arriving at Yamaku and immediately making friends with absolutely everybody.
He is:
- a foreigner
- rich
- good at sports
- gets top grades in all subjects
- has Hanako ask him out on a date on the second day after they meet for the first time
- beats Emi in their first race
- vanquishes Shizune at risk
- immediately understands Rin and
- either has a disability that does not affect him at all or
- has been dealt the cruelst fate the author could think of and still heroically never complains and outperforms all his schoolmates.

Generally, I'd consider any fic where I can check two or more of the above a Mary Sue fic.
