Act I
Scene I
Note, I do borrow quite a bit of text from Katawa Shoujo itself, please do not think I'm trying to take credit for it or any of that nonsense, it's just to let the reader orient himself. As soon as the class introductions are concluded and the next scene commences I shall borrow as little text as possible. I do intend to make this story full length, so I shall try to write as much as I can while I am still in summer vacation, and hopefully I can come up with a story as time goes on. A minimum of three scenes per act is quite a daunting task, but I hope I can accomplish it.
The gate looked far too pompous for what it was. In fact, gates in general seem to do that, but this one especially so. Red bricks, black wrought iron and grey plaster, assembled into a whole that didn't feel welcoming at all. Of course I didn't want to get stuck on thinking about the gate for too long, so I entered through it with a brisk pace that felt surprisingly good.
I was told that there's supposed to be someone waiting for me, and the only person on the grounds that I can find is this short girl with brown hair reaching down no further than her neck. For some reason though I feel like she isn't actually the person who was supposed to be waiting.
She clearly is a student, already in uniform, and I can't help but think that she is rather cute-
"SWEET BEAN BREAD!"
Uhm... what?
She turns around, and then realized that I had just heard her little outburst.
Her face now slowly growing pink, she speaks up, "O-oh, uh, uhm. Hello, I'm sorry about that, I must have startled you huh? I'm so sorry, it's just a habit of mine...".
"You randomly yell out types of food?", I ask.
"Not just any," she responds, " I yell out my favorite types of food as a form of encouragement. I basically try to tell myself I'll give myself my favorite meal as a reward whenever I feel like I can't accomplish something..."
Still confused, I ask her, "are you a new student here?"
Still blushing, she replies, "ye-yes. I got ill and couldn't finish my senior year, and my doctors recommended that I come here."
"I guess that makes two of us then," I comment, somehow feeling encouraged by the fact that I have a fellow companion who had to abandon almost everything from her past life. "So, where are you headed to right now?"
Her blush finally gone, the girl responds, "A certain Mr. Mutou is supposed to be waiting for me in the main building, I have him for homeroom apparently."
Hmm, I wonder if he is waiting for us both? "Well, someone is waiting for me as well, so I guess we can head on together."
"Su-sure," she mutters. She seems to be quite shy eh?
And so we head into the main building. Sure enough, a tall man with bad posture notices us as we enter. We're the only people in the lobby, so it's only logical.
"Ah, I imagine you must be Furukawa and you must be... Ni... Na... Niki?". Of course he butchers only my last name...
"Nakai" I correct, trying to act unfazed by his failed attempts at pronouncing my surname.
"Excellent. Well, Miss Furukawa, Mr. Nakai, I'm your science teacher." He then proceeds to extend his arm out to give us a handshake. "My name is Mutou. Welcome"
The girl, Furukawa, sheepishly raises her arm in a quick and rather awkward handshake, her face staring at the floor.
"Now Mr. Nakai, the nurse specifically asked you to come in for a brief check-in visit, but there's no time for that. So I suggest that we should all get going and introduce you two to the rest of the class. They're waiting already."
"Well, off we go" I tell Furukawa.
"Ye- yes. off we go."
The third door down the third floor corridor is marked as the classroom for class 3-3.
Mutou opens the door and enters.
"Ladies first." I say, letting Furukawa enter before me.
"Thank you..."
"Good morning everyone, sorry I am late again," Mutou announces, as I instantly freeze. Furukawa notices this and tugs me by the sleeve of my shirt. Right right, I'm not alone here.
I follow Furukawa into the classroom and look around, partially so I won't have to meet the curious gazes of my new classmates. It's pretty spacious; the ceiling is unusually high and there's lots of space left over around and inbetween the desks. And entire wall taken up by the blackboards and the high, old fashioned windows set at head level only make it seem larger.
My curiosity is interrupted by Mutou. "...please welcome our newest classmates."
He claps his hands and so does everyone else, except one girl in the first row with only one hand. I cringe a little, but hide it by bowing in thanks, Furukawa quickly following in my example. A collective silence tells me that one of us should probably open our mouths now.
Seeing that Furukawa once again is staring at the floor, I speak up. "So... I'm Hisao Nakai," and after that? "My hobbies are reading and soccer. I hope to get along well with everyone even though I'm a new student." And after that?
Furukawa then realizes it is her turn, and she finally addresses the classroom, while nervously toying with her skirt, "Hello everyone. My name is Nagisa Furukawa... uhm... I don't actually have any hobbies to speak of, but I like theater and the great dango family... I also hope to get along well with everyone."
She quickly bows and then proceeds to not lift her face. Nagisa eh, well I barely met her, so I'll keep referring to her as Furukawa. But... great dango family? Is that something that exists? Well, I suppose it could have gone worse
We both stand awkwardly in the front of the class as Mutou drones about getting along. Finally he decides to turn his attention to us, "We're going to be doing some group work today, so that'll give you a chance to talk to everyone. Is that okay with you?"
"Yeah, it's fine with me." Furukawa simply nods in agreement.
"That's good. You can work with Hakamichi. She is the class representative. Hakamichi, would you and Mikado mind moving your tables over to the right a bit? We need some space for Furukawa and Nakai to sit together. Hakamichi can explain anything you two might want to know. And who else would be able to do that better, right?"
I am able to deduce where the pair Mutou was reffering too are, due to the fact that they are now of course shifting their desks to make room for one more, since there is only one desk in that row that is empty. Furukawa and I quickly proceed to take our seats.
I decide to take the seat closest to the pair, a gesture that Furukawa seems to genuinely appreciate. "I take it you two are Hakamichi and Mikado, right? It's nice to meet you."
"Hahaha~!" Her laughter catches us offguard. "It's nice to meet you, too! Shicchan is deaf, so I'm the person who translates things back and forth for her."
"She's... deaf?" Furukawa asks, confused and taken aback by Mikado's bubbly personality.
"Yep yep yep!", Mikado spouts, as Hakamichi proceeds to wave to us both.
"She says it's nice to meet you, too!"
"You two are the new students right? Shicchan, isn't it obvious? Of course they are~! They seem like very interesting people don't they~! Especially Nachan!"
"Eh? I... don't consider myself very interesting... I think... I'm average actually..."
"Nonsense, there is no such thing as an averagely interesting person! You're right Shicchan! Tell us about yourself! Come on! Tell us~!" I'm surprised she is able to keep up with Mikado's seemingly hyper persona.
"Well... I come from Hikarizaka. It's a small city... I used to attend the private high school there. I used to love walking up the cherry blossom -lined path leading to the entrance each spring, but then...", Furukawa looks noticeably downtrodden. I wonder if that is what I look like too, seeing as we seem to be going through very similar circumstances.
"No need to tell us more! Yea, Shicchan! Nachan, if you don't want to talk about it just tell us okay~? We understand it had to be hard to leave your home, but trust us, soon this will be your home too~! I know you'll come to love Yamaku, I just know it!". Furukawa gives a sigh of relief, clearly happy that she is no longer the center of attention of the odd pair. Soon enough I become the target myself.
"Don't think we've forgotten about you Hicchan~!"
"Hicchan... I never really liked that nickname..."
"It fits! You look just like I imagined! Yep! Just like a Hicchan! So, what's your story!"
"Uhm... well..." feeling my heart start pounding faster and faster, I place my hand over my chest and sigh...
"Ah... I see Hicchan! No worries, you don't have to tell us anything either~! Ah, and another thing, you can call me Misha! And you don't have to call Shicchan something so formal like 'Hakamichi' or 'class rep' all the time! Just call her Shicchan~!"
"Shicchan?" A just noticeable patch of pink grows on her cheeks.
"Ahahaha~! Okay, maybe that's too casual. Shicchan says Nachan can call her Shicchan though, I guess she is just embarrassed that a guy is calling her that hahaha~!"
"Uhm," Furukawa speaks up, "you two can call me Nachan if you like, but uhm... Nakai-san..."
"D- don't worry... Furukawa," for whatever reason I find myself blushing, "I don't mind."
"Alrighty then!" Once again Misha surprises us. "Huh? Oh, right, we haven't even touched the assignment! We should start working now, or Shicchan will get mad."
"It seems... pretty long too..." Furukawa adds. "If we want to finish it before class ends we should probably start, though I'm not sure if I can contribute, I shouldn't be in Mutou's class right now after all... I only have him for homeroom..."
I decide to speak up, "Hey, we need all the help we can get. I think you can spare us your time for now right? Plus, I need a companion."
"Eh? Co- companion?!" Furukawa asks, clearly having misinterpreted me.
"Erh, I mean, you know... since we're both new students... we should... stick together, so we don't feel so out of place."
Misha suddenly interrupts us, "Oohohoho, I can already see love bloomin- OW! Okay okay Shicchan! Shicchan is starting to get angry, so we should probably start working now."
Furukawa and I both agree and we commence to work on the assignment.
The assignment is quite challenging to finish though, its rather difficult and pointlessly long. Still, with four of us working on it, we manage to finish a few minutes before the rest of the class, despite having started later.
Soon enough, the clock tower bells ring, signalling the end of the period. Time for lunch.
Without knowing what else to do, Furukawa and I follow Misha, who is beckoning us into the hallway and down the stairs.
We travel all the way to the bottom floor. Just like everything in this school, the cafeteria seems too spacious and oddly modern in contrast to the classic exterior.
"Its the cafeteria~!", such a statement should be able to go without saying.
We proceed down the lunch line, and I'm confronted by the rather long list of menu options, though I'm quickly disappointed when I realize the reason for this is due to some students needing specific diets or else...
"No sweet bean bread..." Furukawa notes, with a hint of sadness, as she too examines the lunch menu.
"Well, it's better then nothing I suppose" I add, trying to cheer her up.
We both end up picking something at random and follow Shizune to a table, sitting opposite of her.
As I begin to chow down on the rather stale food, Misha slams her hands onto the table and then begins to talk. Once again Furukawa seems shocked, I suppose for someone as shy as her, Misha's personality can be quite daunting.
After Shizune gives a few hand gestures, Misha speaks up, "Do you want to know something?"
"About what?" I ask.
"About anything! We're your guides so you should ask if there is something~!"
"Hmmm, I wonder..."
Furukawa is the one who interrupts me this time, "Uhm... does this school have a theater club?"
Shizune proceeds to eagerly wave her fingers about and engages in a short and rather silent conversation with Misha, who then replies, "We most certainly do~! It is quite popular too! I'm sure you would fit right in!"
"Where can I find it?" Furukawa asks.
After Misha flashes a frown for an instant, she responds, "Its on the second floor! We have a few classrooms up there that aren't used for anything other then clubs in fact. I believe it is quite fun too~!"
And that is how lunch went, Furukawa and I eagerly questioned the strange and rather contrasting pair of the bubbly and hyper Misha and the stoic and calm Shizune. Soon enough the bells ring once more, beckoning the students to head back to class.
"Well, I guess it's time to head back to class..."- Furukawa says, rather upset.
"Aww, don't look so down~! We still have you for the rest of the day!", Misha responds, putting on a pouty face, which I admit is rather cute.
Once again, Furukawa flourishes into a blush, clearly she isn't used to these type of social interactions, though it could just be her way of dealing with coming to a completely new environment. "You're right. I just don't want to introduce myself all over again."
Deciding I need to give her some encouragement, I speak. "That's the spirit, don't get your hopes down. If you want, we can meet up again after school. I want to go to the library and I believe its on the second floor too, so we can head up together."
After processing my statement for a moment, she eagerly agrees.
Suddenly, "Wahahahaha! Hicchan, you move so fast~!", I wonder if I will ever get used to this, "You barely met her today and you are already asking her out on a date? Well done! But why didn't you want to go on a date with us?".
After Misha once more gives a cute pouty face, I just give a long sigh and we all head back to class.
After class ended, I head to the nurse's office. Furukawa wants accompany me so we both decide to follow the Dynamic Duo together. The idea of having an entire building for just medical purposes reminded me once more of what school I was attending. Soon enough we arrive, and after a short conversation about the different facilities available here, the Nurse proceeds to remind me of the fact that my life is now fully dependent on an assortment of chemicals.
"So, you already have medication for the arrhythmia, just remember to take your pills every morning and evening or it won't be much help."
He then proceeds to ask me about any sports I played before the incident, and quickly reminds me that I can no longer play said sports. Talking about a heart condition so plainly though reminds me of the days in the hospital, so I would much rather go outside right now, and I think the nurse can see it in my face.
"Good, that's it then. Come meet me if you ever need something."
Finally I am allowed to step out and I see Furukawa waiting patiently.
"Arrhythmia?", huh? Oh, she must have overheard. Well, no turning back now, it would be rude to just sidestep the conversation right now.
"Yes, irregular heart beat, if I'm not careful I could end up in the hospital again. I have to take over a dozen pills practically to stay alive."
"Oh... I'm sorry...", she looks rather guilty of having brought the topic up, which in turn makes me feel guilty about having made her upset.
"Don't worry about it. We all came to this school for some reason or another."
"You're right. Well, if you don't mind... can we..."
Ah, right, theater club. Deciding I have nothing better to do, and keeping my promise with her from earlier today we walk onward, heading back to the main building. It's nice knowing I've made a friend on my first day, and maybe even three if I count Misha and Shizune, maybe this school won't be too bad after all.

"Most of us think it would be interesting to be placed in Hisao's situation, I am here to tell you it is not. There is a reason he got so depressed, and I am positive none of us would want to end up on the roof with a real-life Kenji, (well there might be a few of you out there who would enjoy it, but hey, I don't judge

)"
