Back to story, perhaps Emi lost a couple screws along with her legs, and her current temperament is caused by that tragic attack. She's still straight enough to avoid a Section 8, so now she's parlaying her front-line knowledge to the rest of the team, so they can design better, more survivable mecha. This means that she and Hanako can still switch roles or retain the original ones and it'll still work.

And Yuuko, perhaps she could be a bridge bunny (do starbases have bridges?) so that she can't cause too much trouble... I hope.

I rather like the original ideas for Hanako and Emi. Edit: You know what, I like the idea of Emi being injured in battle and starting to develop weapons over the original when I think more about it.
