I had to do a lot of weird stuff to get that working right, GIMP is kind of odd. The quotation marks still didn't turn out right- how did you get them to slant?

I would make the question mark a layer all to its own first. (Just type out a sentence and leave the question mark out. Click elsewhere to open up a new place for text.)
Then, on the question mark layer, try using the Shear tool (it's above the Gradient tool (at least it is in my version)) and mess around until you get it to look the way you want.
After that, I'd move the question mark into place.

I haven't done any edits for this topic, but I hope this information helps you in some way.

I'd just like to make note here that if any of this turns out to be close to the actual plot, the devs should NOT feel obliged to change the plot just because of that..
