This happens quite early on in Act 1. Shizune tells him this at lunch on his second day (the scene is called "Smalltalk").

I wonder to this day whether the book club is actually that popular, or if Shizune really just didn't want him to join.

Neither of those would surprise me in the least :D.

Maybe we could think that there isn't many people into reading nowadays, but we are talking about Yamaku. I think the students of this place enjoy reading more than physical activities or hanging out (especially those who live in dorms) because some of them simply can't do these activities

In a school where many students [could|may] have mobility or endurance problems, I imagine clubs that don't require physical activity (like a book club) would be popular. So I imagine that it was indeed, full.

On a general note, I doubt that -- being the stickler for the rules that she is -- Shizune would not have lied about whether or not Hisao could have joined another club. Then again, Shizune was trying to ..err.. persuade Hisao into joining the Student Council, I would imagine that she would not have gone out of her way to make it easy for him to join the "whatever" club.
I like all the girls in KS, but empathize with Hanako the most.

Wait. You doubt that she would not have lied?
NB: none of the above is a request

I wanted to knew what these people are doing in this club, is it about exchange recommandations and opinions on their readings, or something else ?
Don't know, but wish I knew! Why not ask it over at the 'Ask' thread and see if some dev will give you a straight or semi-straight answer?
They're the same. They just sit in the library and read, with a scant few taking it seriously and actually discussing what they've read.

That came out confusing, didn't it. :? To clarify -- Shizune would not have lied to Hisao about another club. For example, she would have not told Hisao that the "Underwater Basket Weaving Society" didn't exist or was full if it existed and were accepting members. On the other hand, she would most certainly make a "the Student Council is a better, funner, and more productive place to be than the Underwater Basket Weaving Society" speech in the process of delivering the truthful information.

-------------------------

Unrelated to the above: I'm going to put a link to an article on The Atlantic on cliques here (since I don't know where else to put it). I couldn't help but think of Yamaku when I read it.

I so want to write a story about the Underwater Basket Weaving Society. It sounds like excellent physiotherapy under the right circumstances, for the right people. :D
Post-Yamaku, what happens? After The Dream is a mosaic that follows everyone to the (sometimes) bitter end.

I don't know, I think Shizune would be more than willing to lie about it. She isn't exactly subtle with her manipulations.

And going by what Suriko said, I imagine that Shizune doesn't exactly approve of the dicking around that happens in the book club. Just another reason to keep him far, far away from it.

Sounds like it's the catch-all club for "I'm pressured socially to join a club but I don't really want to" people

They are the best kind of clubs.

One year my high school's yearbook had a "nothing club" in which they listed every student who wasn't involved in anything. Badge of honour, I felt.

Me and some pals had a porn club once. I imagine Akira would form a secret booze club if she were a Yamaku student...Or, hell, she'd form one with Lilly and Hanako even if she wasn't.
