We have a recommend a Visual Novel topic. We might as well have the counterpoint to it. This is for all those games you've played that just weren't good.


I recently played a game called Cosplay Fetish Academy, mainly because with a name like that, I figured it would be pretty outlandish.

It's not. It's a very bland generic highschool romance game, featuring characters that are about as bland and one dimensional as humanly possible. There's not even really that much cosplay.

The gimic is that the main character is struck by lightning and almost killed. This teleports him and his two identical twin cousins that are living with him (and serve as the main two love interests) to another world almost identical to our own except that all the women wear next to no clothing. (Note: Despite the fact that the man character was the only one struck by lightning all three of them appear in the new world. Also the fact that he was struck by lightning is complelty ignored after about a scene or two. The game isn't even really funny.

Seemingly important scenes and characters don't get their own backgrounds, characters or even CGs.
All the girls seem to fall into the "oh no! We can't! We shouldn't be doing this!" mentality when it comes to their sex scenes.
The main character seems to lose every aspect of his (already limited) personality once the game gets to the relationship stuff. At that point, he'll do absolute anything his girlfriend says in order to get sex. One of the girls eve gets him into several fights with much older and bigger guys where he gets his ass beat (not that it gives us a CG for tis or sprites for the guys) but that's alright once she offers him sex later.
There are quite a bit of sex scenes though. In fact in a few cases they actually have a sex scene, do a time skip ahead, then immediately have the character say "Well, it's been a while since we had sex" and then starts another sex scene."
And frankly, even seeing all the characters next to naked in every scene gets old a lot quicker than you would expect it to.

In some of the endings you'll miraculously wake up one day and discover you're back in your old world with no explanation. Some endings you stay behind in the new one. There's two harem endings and only one actual bad ending (which frankly his the funniest thing in the game.)

Oh, and the music sucks too. Most of it sounds like it comes off of infomercials.

So in short, not a good game, not a horrible game, not even a "Dammit, Japan! What were you thinking?" game (which is what i was actually expecting it to be.) It's just really really bland and uninteresting.

Looks like a fun thread. Sadly, I don't have much to add to it. All of the VNs I've done so far were at worst "meh, this isn't that bad".

On second though, there were Yayoi's and especially Rimu's routes in Deardrops, which were short and annoying fanservice routes with overkill solutions to minor problems.

I could've warned you off of that one. I played it just before KS. It's got some funny lines and decent scenes but it's far from interesting.

Well, it's catering to a fetish even in the title. You can't have expected much.

To segue back on topic, that's a good summary of my reaction to Boob Wars (link not work safe, obviously). I was hoping for something awesomely dumb and ridiculously silly, but it was a weirdly joyless grind that played its skeletal stupid plot almost completely straight. A plot mostly built on the "rape 'em until they enjoy it" trope.

To rephrase it in terms of an old Roger Ebert quote, I was looking for bad, and I got boring. Plus rape.

Oh god, that VN...The thing is, the premise is awesomely dumb. But the game plays the premise as if it isn't, i.e., completely straight. The "rape 'em until they enjoy it" thing isn't a huge problem on my end (but it was boring here) but I can't even enjoy all these boobs because its insistence on playing this as a legit premise is just painful. Another VN called *"Do You Like Horny Bunnies?" has a ridiculous and silly premise that works because it isn't trying to bullshit itself into being a legitimate thing. This though...Ugh.

*This VN is quite good if you're going in for the porn but obviously offers little in the way of story (though it has its moments; I recall a rape scene that was played legitimately for drama...Well, actually the rape was offscreen. The aftermath played for drama)
