Anime is a fairly stylized drawing style, you can only fit in so much detail - I don't think the scars could have been rendered any more realistic without sticking out as being randomly more realistic than everything else in the game. The veIny/spider pattern is a good enough approximation.

The scars probably *are* supposed to be that horrible - they're discribed as "leathery", and have to justify ppl staring even at a place where missing limbs are usual sights.

...sure, it would be off-putting a first, but it would be hard to permanently stay creeped out if you saw her doing everyday things like that. Even if she looked like the phantom of the opera himself, she would look like that while getting drunk in a girlish-pink nightgown, having tea with her friends, or making some futile attempts to get a request for a new ID card out of her mouth. Horror/repulsion pretty much works through novelty and uncertainty.
After a while, it would be just what she looks like.

I mean, there's a lot of RL horribly disfigured ppl out there (including some that probably look a lot worse than Hanako does), and while some might be miserable, many of them are bound to have normal friends and partners and coworkers.

Not to mention the fact that people tend to become desensitized to stuff if they see it often enough. That's why surgeons and emergency ward doctors don't even bat an eyelid anymore at stuff that would make others pass out. Even Hisao, upon first seeing Hanako's bare back, comments to himself that he'd be much more shocked if he hadn't already spent a lot of time looking at Hanako's facial scarring.

Which one? The guy who looks like a rotten corpse or the guy with a pretty bad sunburn on his face?

Right? The original (and actually how Erik is described in the Phantom of the Opera novel):

or the one most people think of when they think "Phantom of the Opera"?:

There's also the Robert Englund one:

In other news, Hanako might be more aware of an East Asian celebrity who bounced back after suffering 3rd degree burns in a filming accident: Selina Jen of the group S.H.E. She apparently gamely showed her scars in a recent performance. (The accident took place in Oct. 2010. Over 54% of her body was affected.) Unlike Hanako, her face was unaffected.

(Can't believe I didn't mention Selina before. Her story caused quite a stir in the Mandarin-speaking world.)

Bit of a nitpick, but in my opinion even the phantom in the original 1920 film wasn't entirely in line with the Erik described in the novel. Hell, i don't think it would be even possible to portray such an avatar of misery and death.

Also, now i'm picturing Hanako taking the appeareance (cosplay) and attitude of the Phantom and loving every second of it.

Now the question is who would play the other parts...

Sounds like a job for Andy Serkis and the CGI gang.

I remembered we having a discussion on this. Need to find the thread.

Doctors perform an odd sort of reconstructive surgery on a young lady with a story fairly similar to Hanako's.

...So they built a face on her breast, to transplant to her head later?

Huh.

I actually watched a movie today with a character that reminded me of Hanako.

She even kept her hair covering her face most of the time.

Of course by the end of the movie, she successfully committed suicide. Twice.

Sorry. I forgot to put the title of the movie.

Frankenstein Created Woman.

That should explain a few things.

Just a bit.
