Was seriously about to shit myself until I read the word 'Anal'. Now I'm just laughing my ass off. No pun intended.

That picture is terrifying, even moreso with the word 'anal' hanging out there. Like, maybe she means for you. Eugh...

After much indecisiveness, I've decided to post this here in an attempt to reach out to others that may understand. First I thought about posting in Hanako's broken heart club, but realized I wasn't comfortable sharing my stories and problems. Even though everyone on these forums shares having played this game and should understand to some extent, the community also seems to joke around quite abit(so I don't know if any of this will be taken seriously) and I don't know anyone here. I also contemplated starting my own thread titled "How to deal with post play effects?" but decided to check the stickies and found "I have so much FEELS! What should I do?!", which seemed to fit, under the public service announcement which redirected me here, so here I am.

Brief backstory out of the way, time to get on with it. Katawa Shoujo has changed my life in many ways, more than any other game i've played or novel I've read. Some changes have been positive, others not so much. The negative change that I've recently taken note of is why I'm here. The problem isn't so much the stories(i've played the routes of Emi, Lilly, and Hanako, in that order), as I've played sad games before, but the subjects that are touched upon. After playing through each route, I've found myself more than just sad but depressed about aspects of my own life. At first I thought it was just the sad nature of parts of the game causing me to think more negatively about myself. When I found the game about a year ago and played through Emi's route, I was going through a rough period in my life and a couple months ago, when I played through Lilly's route, I was also having some problems. Yet a couple days ago our internet was down, so I played through Hanako's route and realized it left me just as depressed as the others even though it was the first day of spring break and I should have been happy. The reason I was depressed after each route is because going through each made aware of problems in my own life. I don't really want to give examples for reasons of spoilers and I'm not sure how the community will react, so please just take my word for it. Though I may end up sharing in Hanako's broken heart club later on.

Has this happened to anyone else? If so, how did you deal with it. I feel kind of pathetic admitting how depressed this has made me as many people live much harder lives then me, but I wasn't sure where else to go.

I have had sad stories make me feel sad before, but I have usually been able to embrace that feeling of sadness. I told somebody I was depressed once, and they asked me, "What are you depressing?" Perhaps that perspective can help you.

Being aware of problems in your own life isn't a bad thing, provided you have some solution, or at least some way to lessen the problems. I can't say much more on this, because I don't know enough about your problems, but being aware of your problems is better than being oblivious.

Now, getting back to KS... I honestly thing that there is more happiness in most routes than sadness. No route is without suffering, but Hanako's route has a very positive and uplifting ending, as does Rin's route. Maybe focusing on the happy moments of the story would help?

Just booted up the game again for the first time in forever, and am going through the Prologue...and am just hit by how generally awful the start of the game is for Hisao.
The girl he has feelings for confesses to him, and he can literally do nothing about it as his heart gives out on him.

He spends four months in the hospital recovering from multiple surgeries, becomes convinced that his friends have abandoned him, adopts a newer and understandably more bitter take on the universe and everything in it, and draws almost entirely into himself.

Couple that with the fact that he's the only member of the cast with a life-threatening condition, and I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say Hisao is in more potential jeopardy than anyone else in the game. I don't want to think about what would have happened if he had to go back to his old school.
Characters: Shizune > Lilly > Rin > Emi > Hanako
Routes: Lilly > Rin > Shizune > Hanako > Emi

Replaying now, so subject to flux. Except Shizune. Shizune is best.

Honestly, I think KS has one of the darkest beginnings of any VN, period. It's pretty messed up...
I love the interpretation of Pac-Man where he's a just a lowly worker retrieving golf balls left all over the course by the rich masters and the ghosts are all previous workers who got conked on the head and killed by incoming golf balls in the line of duty.

I'd argue Kira-Kira* is worse, but KS is definitely pretty dark.

*It shares the name with a more popular VN, but it's about a boy who witnesses his sister kill his mother in self defense from abuse and then goes to adopt her, only to have his emotions manipulated and his life threatened by the girl in one of the creepiest mood whiplashes I've ever seen.

This all just feels bizarre...

I give the guy credit. A lot of characters in that situation would have gone into the school being all bitter and cynical.

Come to think of it, making Hisao an angrier character would have given the game an interesting edge.

Ah. Well, he was bitter and cynical to a degree. He just went the depressed route over the angry one.
