In their defense, the parts they played through were not all that serious/dramatic yet, and I know I for one didn't know how serious this game would be until i got at a serious point in the game.
Uh...The game starts off with a heart attack and a depressing upheaval of some guy's whole life.

 As someone who's played a few VNs (granted, more perverse than this one), this thing punched me in the face with its seriousness from the start.

<Ascension>: "I laughed, cried, vomited in my mouth a little, and even had time for marshmallows afterwards. Well played, Xanatos. Well played."

Considering that most mainstream game devs these days more or less tiptoe around their audience like we're made of china, I found such a punch in the face quite refreshing.

I actually started KS thinking it was some cripple emotional porn, before i even saw Iwanako i found myself caught in the story and was quite surprised at how well made and honest it was. I don't really play VNs by the way. KS is my first and is probable that Analogue will be my second.

I wasn't aware there was any tiptoeing.

It has to do with things like obvious-ass tutorialish stuff for supposedly-adult games, constantly-lowering difficulty levels, and other things sprinkled whether light- or heavy-handedly to ensure that general audiences won't be offended by them. I... I'm probably not explaining it very well. It just has to do with the modern video game industry, I guess. I'm studying game design so maybe I'm more conscious of it than I realize other people are... or, maybe I'm cynical and hypercritical. However you want to see it. *shrug*

Nah. The twisted humor comes from the censor.
