why are they going back to yamaku? didnt the school year end with summer vacation? haven't they graduated already?

I read somewhere on the forums that the Japanese have a different school year than most. They go to school all year round with a break during the summer, or something like that.

The Japanese school year starts in April.

Semester exams. Japanese schools tend to have 3 semesters. Final exams are in march to early April(school dependent). Lily going to scotland before summer break.

Another thing that differen't stories take place in differen't time lines, but also yeah Japanese students that go to summer school don't go to catch up, they go to improve them selves. Other words the really smart ones go to school during summer XD, or for clubs
