Just ... wow!

Post by Swoopie »

Just wanted to somehow show my appreciation on how an extraordinary beautiful story Katawa Shoujo is. It is truly a work of art. The whole atmosphere, the scenes, the music, the sound effects and ofcourse, most importantly the way the characters are portrayed. I always have been a sentimental guy, but I go totally absorbed into the story, feeling with the characters, even pinking away a tear now and then.

I read some messages across the Internet on people that greatly opposed the idea of a dating sim with disabled girls. I don't know where they got that idea from, but this interactive novel is a far cry from deserving such a judgment. It makes you think, think about the characters, think about your own relationships. And ofcourse there is the erotic part, but, in all honesty, although I liked to see the girls naked, it was NOT the erotic scenes I was looking forward to, but it was actually the scenes where the girl would open up to me and I would be treated by her happiness and the warm and fuzzy feeling that I accomplished a level of understanding.

With Emi it was spot-on for me, Shizune had that effect on me far less unfortunately, while for Rin it was utterly rewarding, although the way to get there felt as if I were struggling with those emotions myself.

Phew, I could go on forever, but big BIG compliments for the whole team! A terrific job!

Sorry guys, put this in the 'Feedback' forum first, I blatantly omitted to read "The Rule"

I totally agree. I've only played 3 of the routes so far (Emi, Hanako and Lilly), all good endings. And I'm... Torn. It's a truly amazing game the way everything ties together to create emotion in you. When the music changed when a character is angry or upset, made me brim with tears.

I've never felt so emotionally attached to something before. I feel happy when a route ends but you never want them to end.

Considering the majority of VNs treat the sex scenes in the most gratuitous, overblown, silly, and contrived ways possible it's not hard to see why many were apprehensive when hearing about KSs content. I imagine the ones that gave the game a try were probably pleasently surprised to be wrong about it.

I almost always just skip past the sex scenes in Visual Novels, but I actually read these. They were generally pretty tasteful; though I admit that I especially liked Emi's second scene, which was both hilarious and pretty dang realistic.

The sex scenes nearly killed Fate Stay/Night for me. I loved reading about the Holy Grail War, and hearing Ayako Kawasumi's voice as Saber (my true waifu!), but Nasu seriously does not know how to write sex scenes. They all ended up feeling mechanical and passionless, and strangely tended to give me a craving for seafood. I don't know why.

Slight tangent: on the topic of erotic writing, see if you can find a novel by Tad Williams called "To Green Angel Tower Part 2." It's the fourth book in his "Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn" trilogy (yeah, I know, long story). There's a scene near the end of the book where the male and female leads make love for the first time, and it is the most passionately erotic thing I've ever read. . . and he does it entirely without describing ANY of the actions going on, simply by describing the moonlight, the environment, and the words being spoken.

So true indeed, I know I can be kind of an emotional guy sometimes, but never thought a computer novel would get to me to this extent. It's indeed the perfect mix of character images, moving backgrounds, music, sound effects and the story itself ofcourse. Just perfect. Unfortunately my g/f doesn't understand, at all so I can't really talk to her about it, but ah well. I've played all the routes so far, just missing a few scenes (@ 99%), but every one of them is gripping, both the good and the bad ones. The only one I thought was 'missing out' a bit was the Kenji ending, too abrupt, but then again, it's basically a 'game over' end so no biggie. After having played them all, I'm a bit sad I can't return to that world again to discover new stuff. Then again, maybe I'll just play it through some more to see if I missed some detail somewhere or just to relive the emotions. Not quite sure yet which was my favourite. It's not necessarily the one that brought me to tears the most. I think I'm going for Emi, being the most playful person (absolutely LOVED the shaking of the screen when she unexpectedly punched or shoved 'me') in combination with the good ending, pretty rewarding.

Well, to be honest, I was expecting a nice erotic novel, made extra interesting because of the handicap part, made me very curious  But, in the end, I was totally blown away by what this game actually achieves. And although the erotic scenes were pleasant and stylish, I was totally into the emotional part of the story and could have lived without the sex parts altogether. I even found one of them a bit too explicit for KS (Hanako's).

Haha, or should I say 'Wahahaha!'?, indeed, I totally agree. There were a few scenes that literally made me laugh and this was one of them. That's why I think Emi is my favourite, like I said above.

Seafood? Say what? :)

Anyway, the Tad Williams series looks like an interesting series of novels, I'm afraid though that I will be busy for years with my recently acquired Perry Rhodan series ... And I think I'll wallow a bit in my KS-mood for a few days / weeks before I start thinking of starting to go through another visual novel like KS.

The problem with sex scenes in most VNs is that even if the VN in question is not a sex romp, the sex scenes still feel like porn intended solely for the tintilation of the viewer (which is fine if it fits) rather than two characters expressing love, bonding, making up in a physical way or whatever the plot calls for. Stock H-lines, ejaculation that could put out a forest fire, characters breaking character...a lot of times, the writers aren't even trying, they just fill their H-scene quota as ordered by the suits. KS is the first VN I've played so far that made a genuine attempt to make the scenes fit in, rather than come across as a porn commercial in the middle of a romance movie...but the fact that there were complaints that KS' H-scenes weren't fappable, I doubt we're seeing the start of a trend here.

This is one of the prejudices that I had against visual novels before playing Katawa Shoujo. The ones that I had seen before were gratuitous, vulgar, and generally unpleasant. But here, they are no longer or more graphic than they need to be. And if even these bother you, you can disable them (a brilliant decision on the part of 4LS).

Ah ok, I can see how that affects what people might think when reading his sex scenes ;)
