KS at animecons

Post by Iskander66 »

This past weekend (January 27-29) the family & I were at Ohayocon in Columbus, OH. At a Type-Moon panel, the moderator asked, "So what are some of the visual novels that you have played?" There were several answers shouted back, but then when one fellow said "Katawa Shoujo!" the whole room erupted in applause. No other title got this reaction.

I am curious if anyone else has had the chance to gage public reation like this. I'm enough of an engineer to know that the plural of anecdote is not data, but that crowd reacted to KS.

I'm curious too as to the consensus regarding KS.
Obviously we all praise it highly, or we wouldn't be here.

Though, my morbid curiosity has me wondering how long before we start seeing KS cosplays.

Too late. I don't remember where, but I think it was even a thread on this forum.
Usually I can understand cosplyaers showing their affection for something by dressing up as characters from the show/VN/etc., but somehow it makes me uneasy when people start cosplaying as KS characters...
One day I'll put more than 15 minutes of work into an avatar. One day.

I've seen the same thing. Usually it turns out like this:

They look awful, and they make the game look awful too.

I've become extremely defensive of the game and the characters, not only because of what it's taught me as a person, but I believe it deserves the upmost respect. And when people run around looking like this, "advertising" the game, it kinda pisses me off.

Why? If somebody likes a character and wants to honor them by dressing up as them and imitating them (to a point) at a convention, I don't see a problem with it... especially because none of the characters in KS are defined by their disability, really.

The only thing I could see as iffy was if a Shizune or Misha (or Hisao) cosplayer tried signing without knowing what they were doing, or only saying lewd things? But other than that... as long as they aren't using their cosplay to get special treatment (which has been a problem in... another one of my fandoms), I don't see the issue, and I doubt anybody would do that after playing.

Also, I don't think they look awful?? They look cute to me, for the most part, but jeez what are you expecting from (usually) teenage girls that very often make the costumes themselves. That Hanako in particular has a really good costume although she could style her wig a bit more.

That's because you need serious guts to admit that you play a cripple porn game. That alone is awe-inspiring.

That Picture :|
Shizune and Misha there are good, the rest..

But I just think how piss funny it would be to see a Jigoro, or the exasperated cries of a Kenji explaining "I'm not Harry Potter, get away from me you Feminists!"
Hmm, I may just do a Kenji cosplay just for that reason

Ok, so maybe I was a bit harsh. Better picture?

But even then, I'm not a fan of Hanako and Shizune. They don't really fit the roles all that well.

Cosplaying as Jigoro would be hilarious.

Mmm, the point of cosplay (as I see it, and I've never cosplayed) is to make costumes and have fun dressing up as a character for a day at a con, kind of like a mixture of being a street artist and Halloween on crack. I don't think facial structure or body build or color of skin should stop anybody from cosplaying as a character; I saw a black woman dress up as Ed from Cowboy Bebop and her cosplay was really fantastic, even if she didn't fit the "body type", because the costume and wig were really well done and her poses were spot-on. I don't know; the girls in those pictures did it for fun so I'm not going to criticize them for picking characters that don't match their body type, especially when most of the costumes look at least passable (and most of them better than that). I mean if you wanted all cosplays ever to be 100% true to the character (including body type, skin color, sex of the person doing the cosplay), there might be one or two of any given character, which isn't any fun.

I do agree that most of the wigs could be better, except for the Rins. Their wigs are pretty good, and the one on the right's color is perfect.

Hmmm...Rin and Hanako are probably the best there. Personally, I like that the game is well known and received enough to be cosplayed.

Besides, the more people who cosplay, the more chance a really good one will come along.

Last years Anime Expo(LA) I saw a Hanako cosplayer, seeing cosplay before the full release was something to see

Mind if I shamelessly rip this idea off? Not quite sure where I'm going to get a chance to do so, but this is brilliant.
