Describing the Characters of KS with Music

Post by Pl4t0 » Mon Jan 23, 2012 5:00 pm

Just had an interesting thought: if you had to choose one song to describe each of the major characters in KS, what would they be? It doesn't have to be a straight-up appraisal of their personality, it can be a connection of any sort. Maybe we can share some pretty cool music in the process :D

The characters in question:
-Lilly
-Hanako
-Shizune
-Misha
-Rin
-Emi
-Kenji

I just can't find anything good for Hisao, so no Hisao.
(and if you feel so compelled, I suppose you could throw in the minor characters as well)

I'll start:

Lilly: The Stars Come Out, by Brother Android.
From Brother Android's awesome, free "OctNovDec", an album about autumn and nature.
Lilly doesn't treat her blindness as a disability, yet I can't help but imagining lying with her on a grassy hill somewhere in the solitude of Hokkaido as the stars come out, trying to find the words to describe them to her. Stars are an object of fascination for me, from a philosophical perspective. In turn, it inspires a lot of emotions just thinking about her not being able to experience that.
Those feels. Those feels.

Hanako: Needles, by System of a Down.
This is a song about drug addiction (on the surface, anyways), but it's also a song about being controlled by (and breaking free of) something that comes from within. I don't know if the right word to describe Hanako would be that she is "controlled" by the trauma of her experience, but in a way I feel she is very much trapped by it, and throughout the path we see her break free. Also, it's accompanied by a pretty intense sound, and I imagine Hanako feels pretty intense on the inside.

Shizune: First Friday Funk, by Flying Lotus.
Obviously, Shizune's experience with music is going to be fairly limited. I have the feeling that she would at least be able to find an interest in the throbbing bass of Dubstep (real Dubstep, guys like Loefah and Digital Mystikz, not that Skrillex bro-step crap). Not being deaf, I can't tell if somebody could really interface on that level with the vibrations, but I think there's something to it. Anyways, First Friday Funk (which some of you might recognize from Adult Swim) is a song that I feel strikes very deep emotionally, just by virtue of its sound, and it just reminded me a lot of Shizune's path, for some reason. So, yeah.

Misha: Mood Swings, by Swindle.
Alternatively, Bizarre Love Triangle, by New Order, for fairly obvious reasons :)
Shizune path spoilers:
The Misha of Shizune's path gives us an entirely different perspective on the character than those of the other paths, in which she is more or less revealed to be this seething mass of emotion and depression, well concealed by her bubbly pink surface. I felt that the song reflected that hidden nature very well, with its relatively upbeat exposition dropping into dark oscillations.

Rin: Duel in the Deep, by Lightning Bolt.
Duel in the Deep is the sort of "song" that, at first, doesn't make much sense. It is best described as bizarre, at first glance beyond immediate comprehension. But one night, letting Lightning Bolt's excellent "Wonderful Rainbow" album play on a loop, it just sort of made sense. The circumstances were right, the catalyst was apparently present, and everything fell into place. What was once strange and otherworldly was suddenly evident. I feel that Rin is a lot like that.

On a different note, I think she'd appreciate the raw, alien nature of the sound. It's said that she enjoys this sort of weird music, after all.

Emi: Running, Jamie xx's rendition of Gil Scott-Heron's incredible poetry.
It's all in the lyrics - just give it a listen, and I think you'll be as amazed as I was at how well the lyrics sync up with KS's portrayal of Emi.

Kenji: Stone Cold Crazy, by Queen.
Not only is Kenji pretty crazy, but the song's theme of escape, tension, and paranoia fit Kenji pretty perfectly, in my opinion.

Your turn.

Hanako : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSK-1guFLDk

Fire. She like it. A lot.
That marked her. A bit.

I decided to pick a Princess song for each of them (since I'm clearly a shameless Princess enthusiast). I think the reasons are pretty clear, or they should be if you examine the lyrics...

Emi - Almost There
Hanako - Reflection
Lilly - Just Around The Riverbend
Rin - Belle
Shizune - When Will My Life Begin

They may in some minor cases contradict their disabilities, but in a figurative/personality/content sense I think they all fit well.

Emi - Super Freak by Rick James
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvFpRrhK1QQ
I would used Ludacris' "You's a Ho" but I know the difference between "Wanting to sexually experiment with one guy who's your boyfriend" and "Spreading your legs for every guy", unlike some prudes on here who calls her a slut.

High on Pills Rin - Never Been by Wiz Khalifa
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szlk9eMWkpU
Also almost any Sublime song can fit her.

Rin in General - Almost any Pink Floyd song or Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

Hanako: Michael Jackson's "Stranger in Moscow"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEEMi2j6lYE&ob=av3e
Because of the chorus "How does it feel...When you're alone and your cold inside?" and the ending verses "I've been so lonely, I'm living lonely, baby!". Plus, it's a song about being isolated from the world.

Hanako Good End: Michael Jackson's "You are Not Alone", (VERY fitting when Hisao shows off his scars to Hanako and vice versa
Christina Aguliera - You're Beautiful (never knew she sang that song)
Umineko no Naku Koro Ni - Thank You for Being Born

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAyKJAtDNCw&ob=av2e
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCBfvgQqDF8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XCRsYXbndk

Shizune - Keep Talking by Pink Floyd
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS-qsh6eTik
Not trying to be funny or trolling here If you read the lyrics, it kinda relates to her and her lack of communicating through normal means.

Misha - Dirty Diana by Michael Jackson

If you choose to console and have sex with Misha in Shizune route, the last verse fits that scene:

Diana walked up to me,
She said I'm all yours tonight
At that I ran to the phone
Sayin' baby I'm alright
I said but unlock the door.
Because I forgot the key.
She said he's not coming back
Because he's slepping with me

Lilly - Any classical song.

Kenji - Any Megadeth song.

Hisao - Lil B's "I Got Bitches" and "Violate that Bitch"

I haven't had time to sit down and try and pin down songs for each character, but I feel like that new song by Christina Perri "A Thousand Years" is kinda applicable to all of them.

Very Heartwarming song.

To the tune of Portal- 'Still Alive'

'HanAKO'

This was a triumph
I'm making a note here
HUGE SUCCESS
It's hard to overstate my vast elation

Hanako's Science
We do what we should because we can
For the good of all of us
except the extras in-game

But there's no sense crying over every scar made
you just keep on trying till you're out of chocolate
And the science gets done
And a 'shoujo' you've become
for the people who aren't still 'aHIRNNNNNNNNNNNNNIGH-'

I might just be angry
I will be so sincere right now
Even though you brought me out and did me
White-knighted to pieces
I threw every piece into the fire
As they burned it hurt because
I really really loved you

Now these text walls from KS make for beautiful lines
Glad they're out of beta, they released it on time
So I'm glad i got burned
Look at all the things we learned
For the people who aren't still 'aHIRNNNNNNNNNNNNNIGH-'

Play KS and leave me...
I would like to stay alone for a while
Maybe you'll find someone else to date you

Maybe THAT Kenji
That was a joke! WAHAHA~ FAT CHANCE
Anyway this chocolate cake is great
it's so delicious and moist

Look at me still talking when there's science to do
When you look at me it makes me glad and happy too
I have skin tests to be done, and some skin grafts to be run
For the people who haven't been ' aHIRNNNNNNNNNNNNNIGH- 'd '

Believe me, more people will 'HIRNNNNNNNNNNNNNIGH'

I'm doing this but more people will 'HIRNNNNNNNNNNNNNIGH'

I feel so glad but more people will 'HIRNNNNNNNNNNNNNIGH'

While you're dying more people will 'HIRNNNNNNNNNNNNNIGH'

And when you're dead still more people will 'HIRNNNNNNNNNNNNNIGH'

They'll all 'HIRNNNNNNNNNIGH-'...

They'll all 'HIRNNNNNNNNNGIH-'...

For Hanako...

For some reason Rin's remind reminds me of the middle 90's rock hit Pepper by butthole surfers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPH-vhpEnaI
Its about identity and how no one can know how they are seem by others, and how shallow com people be.
Don't just eat that hamburger, eat the HELL out of it!

Cool song - the sound of it seems to really fit Rin, too :)

asakayosapro and Pl4t0 wanted to know what the "Gimme the chocolate Hisao" thing was so I put a link to the origins where Hisao gave Hanako the chocolate. And tha's where the meme we know today came from.
