Sencha and Tofu for everyone!

I made the 20 minutes and i don't even feel particularly fatigued. I even feel positive, like i achieved something. Guess this is the runner's high. (doesn't feel better than sex though, lol)

Thanks and congratulations!

Runner's high is only possible for sprints, from what I know, though.

Running just doesn't do it for me, never has. I would argue that an hour and a half of pickup-hockey is comparable to running a good 3-5 miles, and more fun in the bargain. An actual game would qualify as HIIT since you go absolutely all out for your 45 second shift, then hit the benches to recover before doing it all over again. Playing in goal is more taxing from an endurance standpoint, since you don't ever get to stop and sit down, but has fewer bursts of frenetic activity (unless your side is getting trounced).

None of that really matters though. If you want to get in shape and loose some weight, the only way to do it is to control what you eat and get involved in some kind of physical activity. We could debate about one kind of workout over another all day, ditto diet plans, but it all boils down to 'stop stuffing your face and get off your ass, tubby'. The best way to do THAT is to pick something you enjoy and can stick with.

I play hockey because I enjoy it and KNOW I'll stick with it. I'll probably still be doing it when I'm 80. If you can say the same about running or soccer or rock climbing then do that, whatever works for you.

Most diet plans, excepting those which cater to specific dietary needs (diabetes, crohn's, etc.), boil down to caloric intake. If you want to loose weight, you need to expend more calories than you consume, and that means controlling your portions more than anything. I still make/eat the same food I always have, but instead of 'I accidently the whole thing', I separate it into a couple or three tupperware containers and eat the leftovers for lunch the next day.

True. It's one of those preference things really. I prefer to avoid any artificial sweeteners so "Diet" and "Sugar free" is something I don't really drink.

Personally I'm active and workout on a regular basis so I choose to let small things slide every now and then since I watch my consumption.

This, 100x this. Surprisingly (/sarcasm) people want the easy way, no exercise route. :(

This is overall fitness related, but I got my invite for Fitocracy finally. Fitocracy turns fitness into a game where your workouts turn into points and you level up. It's like making your life into an RPG... kinda. Anyway, I just got my account and I have 10 invitations to give out. Disclaimer: in case this post is taken the wrong way, I'm not trying to promote Fitocracy in an area where it isn't appropriate. We're all working on some kind of fitness plan from Emi's Running Schedule to other plans. I feel to gain a greater sense of unity, (to make sure we stick to it for longer than 8 weeks), we could all join together.

Also, there's apparently already a Katawa Shoujo group within Fitocracy! Again, I have 10 invitations to give out via email although I have no idea how long it takes for the invites to go out. Drop me a PM if you're interested.

Today on my run I saw a sign for a 5k in my town at the end of April, which pretty conveniently coincides with the end of the running program, so I guess that's gonna be my goal. :)

Man it feels so nice to be outside haha. After the run, it felt like a shame to just go inside and sit on the computer again, so I even went for a little "extracurricular" walk along the lake. Then I sat on a bench for a while and watched the ducks. :D ohhhhhhhhh what I've been missing

I'll send a PM about fitocracy too, that sounds amazing

Arizona tea is good, but do they sell in packs.... hmmmmm.
All right, here's my understanding of why sugar makes you fat. Keep in mind this is mostly derived from TV and some light reading, I am not an expert:

Carbohydrates come in two varieties: complex and simple. Complex carbohydrates are things like starches, simple carbohydrates are basically sugars. They're both made up mostly of a molecule called glucose, except complex carbohydrates string them along in longer chains than simple ones.

Both of them work by breaking down into glucose, which are then broken down by insulin to provide energy. If you eat a lot of complex carbohydrates, your body works at breaking down the large molecules into glucose bit by bit over time: you get a steady stream of glucose, which your body uses a steady stream of insulin in order to break down. It finishes breaking down the carbs, you get a gentle subsidence of insulin, which is why things like a good bowl of pasta make you want to eat a lot of it at first, but you get full pretty quickly and feel full for a long time.

If you eat a lot of sugars, however, the smaller molecules break down into glucose way faster. Your body now has too much glucose and makes more insulin to compensate. After it finishes breaking down the glucose, it has way too much insulin swimming around looking for sugar to break down and finding none. You start craving sugar again. You drink another soda. Before you know it you've consumed about five hundred calories worth of pure sugar. That's gotta go somewhere: your body can't use all those calories. It gets converted into fat and saved for later.

Soda pop is especially bad because the sugar content is so high and the caffeine exacerbates the effects.

Week 1, Day 2 down. Booyah!

It is true though, the SECOND day is the hardest one. Much more tired today than I was on Tuesday. Body temp is still up and I'm still sweating a bit, even after a shower. Gonna have some water and a cliff bar and maybe stretch a bit more and then I should be good. Maybe stretch first, my legs are tightening a bit, I can feel it. Still feel great though.

Looking forward to my next run!

Took up this regiment, but abandoned it due to erratic weather. Too slippery/snowy/windy right now.

Hmm,
Not sure why, but my left leg is killing me after today's run. My shin hurts as though I banged it on something when I haven't, and I have a deep, throbbing pain at the top of my leg. Plus my whole leg feels weak and like I don't want to put too much weight on it.
Not entirely sure what I've done; the run itself was actually quite easy in terms of stamina and feeling tired, but my leg got worse and worse and after I finished it got really bad.
I've a feeling its just because I'm not used to jogging and its a lot of stress on your legs. If it hasn't recovered by Saturday, I'll skip the session and just go for a big walk instead of the exercise, I don't want to injure myself or anything.

Anyone else had anything like this?

Sounds like you might have a shin splint. It's fairly common for runners to get them, and especially common for new runners who have previously led a generally unhealthy lifestyle. (not saying anything about yours, just a general statement there.) My Dad ran for years, and every so often he'd come down with a shin splint and have to stop running for a week or so while it healed.

Lower leg injuries like that can cause a "cascade" effect up the leg where the whole leg is thrown out of whack, causing soreness elsewhere. The trick is when you feel any serious pain or soreness, STOP EXERCISING right away! If you have injured yourself you can compound the problem by trying to "push through" the pain. It sounds like you may have strained some of your upper leg muscles compensating for the lower leg pain and are now hurt in two places.

It'd recommend a couple acetaminophen or ibuprofen and a warm bath to ease the leg pain (jacuzzi is good if you have one.) Then a visit to your doctor to get your leg looked at. Your doctor may need to refer you to a specialist if the injury is severe. Seriously, don't skip that part, make sure you go to the doctor. Don't try to be Emi and tough it out or we'll all have to go Hisao on you and interrupt every thread you post in with "Go see the doctor Tomagotwo!!". :D

And once you are healed, be sure to start up exercising again. Although I'd recommend backing up a few days on the chart since you will have lost some ground. Don't let an injury stop you. Take care of yourself, heal up, and get back on it!

I've been thinking about running, not because i really need to. I am 160 pounds or so and about 6 feet tall, so i am happy with my body, have a little flab but i still look very thin. Thinking about running because i think i would be good at it. My endurace sucks but that will improve, its my speed that has always amazed me and other people though. Whenever i take off running i have gotten alot of surprising stares from people and comments after about how fast i was, though i can only keep that up for a very short time, and it kill me to run my fastest.

Any way, i was thinking, should i just get out there and start running or should use a chart or plan? I was honestly thinking about starting a short jog to the end of my neighborhood to this road, its a decent distance, not too long but good enough to start i think, and then slowly increase my distance when i leave my neighborhood and get to the road. Maybe i could use my school track too, not sure if its public.

Saw a chart with Emi on it too though, dont have it anymore. Is that one viable?
