Fan Release .deb installer for Ubuntu/Debian Linux (updated)

Post by DrLang » Sat Jan 23, 2010 10:31 pm

For any Ubuntu or Debian users out there, I've put together a Deb installer package for the latest release of Katawa Shoujo that will register it as a package in your system and insert a run icon in your Games menu folder.

EDIT:
I am discontinuing the torrent for now.
I have set up a private repository, which will make downloading the deb file much easier and faster and will allow any updates to be issued automatically.
This is somewhat of an experiment and I will only leave it up so long as it doesn't utterly destroy my allocated bandwidth. I do not expect there to be a high enough demand for that. Also, after adding the repository, the application does not show up in the Ubuntu Software Center. If anyone knows how to make that happen, please PM me.

To add the repository and install on Ubuntu:
* open a terminal and enter
echo "deb http://www.david-weiser.com/repository Packages/" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo aptitude update
sudo apt-get install katawashoujoact1
NOTE: This should not affect your saved game states. You can install the new package with peace of mind. If you're worried though, just backup the ".renpy" folder in your home folder.

I can't help you on any other version of Linux, but it shouldn't be difficult.

If you want to remove it later, open a terminal and enter
sudo dpkg -r katawashoujoact1
This is an unofficial release and I am the sole maintainer. If you have any issues with it, feel free to drop me a PM.

Convenience. I personally find it more convenient to manage my software and menu through the package manager than to set it up by hand. And because I can.

I've done similar when I was running Ubuntu, making packages for that same ease-of-use. So glad I'm not dealing with that any more. :p

I have updated the deb package to utilize a more proper installation for Ubuntu along with setting up an APT repository. See the updates in first post of this thread. I'll be leaving the repository up so long as it doesn't trash my bandwidth, which I do not expect to be a problem.

Someone else also just brought this to my attention. I missed this line
sudo aptitude update
Then retry the apt-get line.
I'll update the parent post. Thank you for bringing this up.

I have to admit this is really cool news. Good job.
Maturity is knowing you were an idiot in the past.
Wisdom is know you will be an idiot in the future.
Common sense is knowing that you should try not to be an idiot NOW.

I let the domain for the old repository lapse. I updated the URL in the first post. Send me a PM if you need help updating your repository.
