Steam now compatible with KS???

Post by DerailedOmegaMale »

I guess people have already made an unsuccessful proposal that KS should be published on Steam multiple times. The subjects was even used as an 1st April joke. I know that. And yet I think that the idea is worth mentioning one more time.

Times have changed. Steam now allows all the content that doesn't violate laws. Yes, even nudity!
Link to an according statement from Steam: https://steamcommunity.com/games/593110 ... 6200553082

Some developers are now publishing games with nudity directly on Steam. Sometimes without any need to apply patches. You just download the game over Steam and it already has nudity in it! I can name some games as examples if you want.

Does this mean that KS is also compatible with Steam now and that you are missing an opportunity to publish it?

Allowing nudity and actually showing penetration are different things. How much exactly do they allow these days?

KS probably could be published on Steam, but why would they do that?
Steam sells games. You have to pay money to put a game on Steam and sell it there.
Why would 4LS PAY money to put a game on Steam that they already offer for free on their own site?

According to their statement they allow everything that isn't illegal in your country. This means for instance that if you live somewhere in the Middle East where porn is illegal then you will not be able to see any hentai games on the Steam Store. Otherwise the devs can publish what they want wherever they want.

PS: According to the best of my knowledge the developers don't even have to waste time deciding where to publish it. They just publish it. If it later turns out that the game's content is illegal in some random country then the game just becomes invisible in that country and that's it. Simple!

Then why are there so many free games on Steam?
I thought that Steam finances itself by taking a percentage of the money done with the sales. So if a game is free then they take 0$. Am I wrong?

I don't think there are all that many "free" games on Steam, and most of those that are are intended as advertisements for other games, i.e. part one will be free to make people buy part two or the main game will be free to make people buy add ons.
I don't know the exact conditions on Steam, but there is at least a small fee (I think about 50$)to get your game on there, and I don't think Steam will offer to sell your game for totally free either, since they want to turn a profit, and if they took nothing at all for 0$ games they would essentially be giving out free bandwidth and work hours.
Anyway, none of this is relevant for KS, since there is already the free download link on their own homepage - as well as probably tons of torrents...

Actually there are quite a lot of them. 29 out of 203 games on my wish-list are free (I only didn't play them due to a lack of time). Some want to sell you additional stuff and some don't. The first one that just appeared in my mind is a VN "Doki Doki Literature Club!" with "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating, which is the highest possible rating. And it's a full game with no need to pay for any add-ons or sequels.
Although it's possible to still pay them to get some optional junk (concept art, soundtrack and wallpapers) not paying for it doesn't really hurt your experience of the game. And it's not like in case of KS they didn't end up selling optional art-books as well.
Another "Overwhelmingly Positive" example of a free VN is "Everlasting Summer" which doesn't try to sell you anything at all.

50$ for publishing a game? That sounds like a pretty pathetic amount of money if you ask me.

I don't think that it's unprofitable for Steam to host free games and sacrifice a little bit of bandwidth. It's an effective way to lure new users to your platform.
The required amount of work hours for Steam is negligible. The most of the stuff happening there is managed by the devs themselves. And it's not like there is a lot to manage. Some indie devs just put their game in there and stop paying attention after a short while without any consequences.

Except that it could reincarnate it's popularity. By far not every person on this planet knows that KS even exists. On the Steam store you get bombarded with links to random games. Both free and non-free.

Also I'm almost certain that KS would reach the "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating in a blink of an eye.

Every person on the planet is quite a ridiculous target
Anyway 50$ is not a lot of money, but if you could just as well not spend it, why should you?

This question has come up before, and the dev's position has always been a firm "No." I don't expect that to change.

Who said that "every person on the planet" has to be the target? "Every Steam-user who accidentally happens to see the game in the Steam store" is already A LOT.

This "argument" can be applied to EVERY possible purchase. Why pay 5$ for a bag of potatoes if you can just keep the 5$ instead?

Well maybe the fact that Steam banned nudity UNTIL NOW is precisely the reason why they refused to do so.

I clarify: This question has come up before (but after Steam lifted the nudity ban).
Anyway, it's useless to try to convince me. I'm not part of 4LS, and I'm not particularly invested in the issue one way or the other.
My only reason to reply was to let you know not to get your hopes up based on what the devs have said before.

If you want to hear it from one of them in person you could take the question to the ASK thread. Several of the devs seem to still look into that now and then.
