What kind of editing is done to the photo backgrounds?

Supposedly the backgrounds are just edited photos. What kind of editing is done?
NOTE: The following post by Suriko will make absolutely no sense since that reply was to a different question from before I edited this topic.

No offense, but that really doesn't tell me much...
If you're unwilling or do not wish to share the details for whatever reason, that's fine - but couldn't you at least tell me that you can't give any more detail? :/ You don't have to explain why.

We don't have a set system or form for the filtering process so can't really help with details about it. Basically, the artists are just randomly bashing their keyboards/tablets with Photoshop open and voila, finished backgrounds.
