I skimmed over this yesterday, and it looks like something I might come back to in more detail later. The original character seems pretty well-realized, a bit grumpy and uptight without lapsing into scenery-chewing angst. I like the premise, and the dialogue has a decent flow to it. Overall presentation's a bit rough, though; there's the tense shift that's already been mentioned, plus a lot of awkward, wordy descriptions. I'd recommend reading it over again, with an eye toward making things more concise.
