If your CPU is old enough, it could be that Firefox is just eating up all your cpu cycles. When it tries to load a page, its cpu usage sky-rockets. Try to have multiple tabs loading at once and you'll surely max out an older cpu. Heck on my dad's 866MHz Pentium 3, you can't even open 3 tabs at once ...
