Re: How do deaf people think?
Youtube brings up a few interesting ASL poems. I could watch this girl gesticulate all day. I don't know any signs, so it's like watching a cool little dance for me, and I'm curious as to what she's specifically changing about her signing to make the poem 'work'. One of our more fluent signers coul...

Re: Team Shizune vs Team Lilly
Reality check: being blind is a major fucking impediment regardless of how well-adapted you are to your disability. Drop her off at a busy mall or subway station at peak hours and she's fucked. Small anecdote that is in no way indicative of every blind person's experiences: Years ago, I was waiting...

Re: Should the adult content be turned off?
I prefer the Seinfeld routine, where kids always ask if they're adopted because if so, that means there's a chance, however small, that their parents are just really, really good friends (who never consummated each other's brains out). As a kid, you do think that sex is gross anyway, so your nice pa...

That's different. That's because nobody wants to think about their parents having sex.yummines wrote:why do parents have to lie about how children are formed?

I never understood whats the big deal about nudity in any kind of media. Seriously. Exactly. Half the population has those parts anyway, and the other half usually doesn't object to seeing them. "Modesty", shame, religion (also causes of the first two), control, maybe just (I really can't...

Re: How do deaf people think?
FWIW, I said that because I've been told as much by deaf people, that it's something hearing people might not expect or understand. In this case, it seemed a possible explanation (but one I wasn't sure of) I appreciate the honesty, and would rather be told than fed some distorted more palatable "tru...

Re: How do deaf people think?
This is, admittedly, a fascinating topic. If I may weigh in my point of view here... <snip, no disrespect intended> I certainly don't believe myself to be thinking in concepts only. There is something I recall one of my lecturers saying earlier in the year; "the invention of communication, be that ...

I dunno about you, but me and most people I know don't consider dating someone "outside the comfort zone" to be a very healthy prospect. But I guess it's each to his own. :) I can't tell if you're being deliberately obtuse or if you just misunderstood me completely. You've already explained it perf...

Re: Team Shizune vs Team Lilly
I don't really see the point in dating somebody that you're not comfortable being with. Me, I would prefer somebody that I actually enjoy doing things with, but to each his own. I think they mean someone who will encourage them to go out and try new things, to have new adventures. Unless you go out...

Re: How do deaf people think?
No, I agree that having some code in your head is vital. What I meant - and what "concept" perhaps wasn't conveying - is that you can't think in words and sentences all the time because it would take too long! Driving a vehicle, cutting up food, you think about what you're doing but you don't put it...

Re: How do deaf people think?
That's really absolutely amazing, it's impossible for me and, I think, for any hearing person to even try to imitate a thought process that goes by imagining, say, a "gun hand" (thumb raised and index finger pointing ahead) to think of the concept of shooting. We discussed earlier in the thread tha...
