I had to think for a moment about just what felt wrong about the passage, but I think somehow their monologues feel more like rehearsed speeches than natural dialogue...

That's probably because you don't post your stories here on the forum, so the people who read it are not from here either.

I enjoyed this chapter. A few minor typos but nothing too horrible.
And let me congratulate you: Miki is a better choice for a second chapter than Kenji
