My three larger stories all have a copious amount of characters ("Katawa Kijo" has 19 characters with lines, "Tripping" has 20 so far, and I don't even want to count those in "Victory Day") and I believe it would be a nightma...

Even those can be extremely well written and surprise you now and again.
Not very often, granted, but I'd say the chances are higher than with three/foursome fics.

You should read it anyway.
It is one of the greatest stories by one of the greatest authors of all time.

Though, personally, I think Superiority is his best story...
