It's just that the people become more sympathetic when you find out more about them. I don't know any amputees personally, but after playing this it's like, "Huh, I see how this could be a struggle in real life" and it gets you thinking.

Anybody know of any good charities for that sort of thing?

I'd like to point out that for any of the girls except maybe Rin whose life potentially was in actual danger, "saved" is a strong word that implies white knighting. They needed help, not a superhero.

Well if someone is born deaf would they even know how to speak let alone have the correct prononciation? But then again if you cant even hear how would you even know how they are pronounced. It seems unlikely to me that Hanako would be so unable to cope with talking to one person that she'd rather starve to death on an island in the middle of nowhere. Eventually she'd get used to you because she'd have to if she didn't want to die.
