Hanako's problem is that she gives TOO MUCH consideration to those around her and not enough to herself.

I think one thing Hisao could do for Hanako is to let her know that she need not bother about other people's opinion of her (even Hisao's). She doesn't need (or want) to be Miss Popular. He could help initiate the thought process in her that she had been worrying about how others see her for too lon...

For me, it's more of "Time to get the hell out of the way."
