For Shizune, I'm with the theory that she can speak, just so terribly that she doesn't want to.

I think the dolls represent good memories to her, much like the chessboard.

Funny. I always thought girls abuse their dolls.

That's Uncanny Valley fetish for ya.

But it's interesting to know that an expensive doll is magically less childish. :P Those porcelain dolls can be expensive as hell really, but more importantly, woe if you so much as touch them with anything less than silken gloves while a collector is nearby. Somehow they carry the tone of "SRSBZ"....

In some ways, she's grown up way more than is healthy. That's probably why she likes cute stuff, as she didn't get to be a child very often after the fire.

In both routes, Hanako liked whatever she was given.

I still want to see Shizune teaching her some chess moves.
